A call comes in that an escaped mental patient is loose on the streets. A woman reports to the desk sergeant about her juvenile delinquent son. She is trying to locate her 17 year old son who was picked up for robbery. She is so beaten down over the way her son behaves, but he apparently has a reputation as being a mean, tough type with the cops who are holding him. Sounds like mom is an enabler who doesn’t want to think her sweet, little baby can be a criminal.
Captain Canelli arranges for the usual petty office chores. Car maintenance, new rookies checking in, and the like. The captain sahres in voiceover, some background in criminal investigation procedures.
Various calls are filtered through the front desk as the investigation resorts to using a lineup to identify the suspect in a robbery. The 17 year old robbery suspect sees his chance, and makes a break for the door. Does mom know where he is? Will she turn him in if she does? Mom has been soft on him long enough, is it time she toughen up?
There seems to be closure on this case, but the calls never stop coming in.
