Folks in Dodge laugh at the new breed of horse known as a Quarter Horse. The tormenting of the old horse rancher builds to the point of needing Matt to step in. Will Ed Butler’s claims about his horses hold up? Will Thatcher’s quarter horse prove its worth in a race?
A challenge is set forth, and the rules of the race is layed out. Thatcher is willing to put up his ranch to back his quarter horse. Trash talking leads to a scuffle, and Thatcher ends up with a bullet in him. Was it self defense? Will the race go on as planned, or will it be forfeited?
Butler is smug about the race, but Matt orchestrates as the racers line up. There’s a gunshot, and they’re off! The race is over quickly and the quarterhorse beats the thoroughbred. Though Thatcher dies from his wounds, what will hapen to his bet that he won from Butler? The situation of the whole thing disgusts Matt.
