McCluney is a prospector who is known around Dodge City as one who has nothing to show for his work except bags of fool’s gold. He also has a way of getting folks to do favors for him at their expense. The worst a person could say is that it’s irritating, but you can’t help doing what the likeable guy asks.
Matt is amazed to learn that McCluney has been murdered through the night. Who would have done such a thing? Everyone in town knows the prospector was always broke. Only his bragging and high hopes made him sound rich.
Clues point to a stranger in town who might not have known McCluney’s past. Matt pursues that option, but all the evidence hasn’t been counted up. An important letter arrives on the day of McCluney’s death, and there’s something else to help Matt find the real killer.
