who is this Danish pianist, and how did he get his own Summer replacement show? The short story is that he was a Jewish entertainer in Denmark who fled Nazi oppression. Since his wife was American, he set out for an entertainment career in the United States. It didn’t work out well, so he got a job pumping gas. He lost his job because his boss felt his heavy accent was too hard for customers to understand. Fortunately tallent agents remembered him, and when Bing Crosby needed someone for his show, the job went to Victor. At the season’s end, he had become so popular that he not only was a regular for the whole season, he got his own show, which started on July 3, 1945.
