Vic is in a drowsy mood, but Sade picks this time to confront him about the latest letter from Bess. He has been trying to read it, but keeps dozing and can’t make sense of it. Laying the guilt trip on as thick as she can, Sade talks about how bad Bess would feeel if the big brother inlaw that she adores can’t read her letter.
Claiming to be digesting every word, Vic can’t get past the second sentence. The venom pours out as Sade gets melodramatic and reads the letter to him. Sade repeats phrases from the letter to emphasize how highly Bess praises Vic in an effort to make Vic feel bad for his drowsiness. Will her efforts impact Vic’s concern?
He manages to waken enough to laugh at the funnier points of the letter, which seems to confuse Sade that he’s actually paying attention.
What goes around comes around, and Sade discovers she is having her own trouble in reading Bess’s handwriting, or something. Though she can’t figure out the writing, or something something, and nothing of note is being said in the lettter, Vic dozes off again, making Sade upset to the point of tears. Huh?
PS: I’m assuming that Vic has been reading the letter on his own initiative, since the scene opens with him dozing with the letter in hand from the start. Also he should at least get credit for paying attention while Sade takes it away to read to him. Her whole point seems to be only to nag and belittle Vic as she pours out the melodrama in her reading. Clearly she hasn’t read the letter herself, since she suddenly discovers that she can’t read Bess’s handwriting.
