Carson City was the place for cattle herds to converge on, and be sold to market. Hopppy enters the salloon to look for the man to buy his cattle, but instead finds a young rancher who is on the brink of suicide.
Is there any hope for the young rancher? He tells how he sold his cattle, then lost all his money when he was jumped by bandits on the way home. Sanderson is the man who both bought Byers cattle, and holds the title to his ranch. Red flags shoot up for Hoppy. What about those bandits? The sheriff has gone hunting after them, but they seem to disappear like phantoms.
Will the sheriff support Hoppy’s suspicions? Not unless he has more evvidence to build a case on. Hoppy goes to make his own deal with Sanderson. What will Hop Along learn when he confronts the shady cattle buyer? A trap is set to force the bandits to show themselves. Can Hoppy take them on singlehanded? Who’s going to be bait for the trap? California manages to talk rhimself innto the dangerous position.
Suspenseful moments are in store, but can Hoppy catch the phanntom bandit before he disappears? A connection is made, and Hoppy takes a more subtle approach to snare his phantom,, and real world bandit to put an end to his crime spree. Just a little more evidence needs to be discovered to fully solve this mystery.
