Miss Brooks has been given the chance to redeem herself of her many transgressions against Mr Conklin, and he lets her take charge of the prized school project, the school garden.
In her breakfast nook at home, Connie talks to Mrs Davis about her expectations with the gardening project. Connie tells what some of the other teachers are doing with other school projects, then Walter phones her with terrible news. He claims that nothing has grown, and gophers have over run the plot of land.
Miss Enright is in charge of the school mascot, and she greets Connie as she heads to tell Conklin about the garden disaster. The secret is out, Miss Enright says that she has been letting her mascot, a goat, graze in the garden. When Conklin arrives after seeing the garden, Miss Enright makes a hasty retreat, but Conklin is too mad to hear any excuses.
Later, Connie meets Boynton in his biology lab. Boynton has the goat in the lab, and has been trying to milk it, to see if the students might like goat’s milk. Boynton refuses to believe that the goat could havve eaten the whole garden on her own, and though Connie thinks she may still be able to put out another crop before her deadline, more bad news comes her way. Miss enright is back to say the deadline for the teacher’s projects is over sooner than anyone thought. Mr Stone, the superintendant is to inspect the school the very next day.
Connie and Boynton decide to visit the farmer’s market, and stock their garden with some fresh produce. Will this be Connie’s big chance to warm herself with Boynton in the middle of the night? As they plant their plants, they hide when a flashlight is spotted moving their way. It’s Mr Conklin and his daughter, Harriot. They have the same idea, and are layering on the produce over the barren land. Suddenly, another light approaches and Conklin takes cover behind the same tree as Connie and Boynton. The gardening episode is ripe for a double take and slow burn from our favorite principal.
Suddenly in doubt about that remaining flashlight, Conklin and Boynton give the bums rush to Mr
Stone. What is he doing out in the garden at midnight? He heard that Conklin might be working late in the office, and wanted to check out the prize winning garden, and he is. At least until some unusual fruits are found, with suspicious labels on them. It looks like somebody has some explaining to do.
