As we look in on the little community today, Abner takes down an order over the telephone, and Lum tries to memorize a poem. Just what does the poem, recently discussed at the Golden Era Club, mean exactly?
Before Abner can get too confused over it, Cedric enters with news about his pending marriage. He never ingtended to propose to the gal, but now he’s trying to act crazy so he can prove he was insane. Will it be the proof that he needs to back out of his breach of promise suit? Does he really need to act all that hard?
It looks like Cedric is in deep trouble. Is there anything Lum and Abner can do to bail him out? Who is the mysterious woman known only as, “W”? Is there a lesson to be learned for Cedric?
In the second half, Cedric is Kidnappped. 421217:
It’s Cedric’s fatal day, and it appears his carefree bachelor days are over. Join Lum, Abner, and Cedric in the feed room as they discuss the situation in the Jot ‘Em Down store. Cedric is all slicked up in his fancy suit, and facing the rality of giving up pinball to settle down to a job, and supporting a family.
Grandpap enters to announce the organ is broken. With no organist, Abner may have to sing a wedding song, but he can’t do it alone. Maybe Cedric will lend a hand. Lum is to officiate the ceremony, and Cedric has a last moment spell of cold feet. He worries that if he gets married, Clarabelle won’t go out with him any mlore. Huh?
It’s amazing how that wedding song sounds just like, They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree.
Will Cedric go through with the wedding? Will Winifred Redfield finally get her man? The lights go out. A commotion ensues, and when the lights go on Cedric is missing, and a note is left in his place to claim that he is kidnapped.
Bonus Tracks:
Tune Wranglers. They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree.
Bill Boyd and his Cowboy Ramblers. Red Lips.
Note: Though this is a typical way to abruptly end a story arc of Lum and Abner, before moving on to something new, this saga actually does continue a little bit.
As the story progresses, the kidnappers are revealed to be some of Cedrics friends, trying to rescue him from his fate. Cedric isn’t quite out in the clear yet, and it takes a case in court to settle the matter. It doesn’t look good for him, but also in typical Lum and Abner style, and after digging the hole they put him in even deeper, Cedric has a last moment rescuer that nullifies the case. The whole thing gets thrown out of court, and Cedric gets to remain a bachelor.
PS: I had some technical difficulty in getting this one out. Microphone troubles led to having the Retrobots take over the show. They can be handy to have around sometimes.
