Joe Friday is working the Robbery Detail. He and partner Frank Smith talk about some of the pressure the robberies in town are putting on the police to get this urgent matter solved. In voiceover, Joe tells about the police actions over the past few months. The cops interview a bartender about a suspicious couple, a woman with a boyfriend named Chet. The bartender, Rod, is a reformed criminal who is trying to go straight. Joe must trust him, because he asks the informant to dig for more details and spy on their suspects. wow, more often than not, Joe gives former convicts a hard time, and seems to never believe they can ever go straight.
Later, in the office Joe and Frank have their moment of idle chatter interupted by a teletype message. Suddenly Rod is missing. Is he in trouble? Has he been double crossing the cops? Finally word from Rob reports the robbers are back in town, and he has been laying low because he’s afraid they might be onto him. Joe and Frank move fast to close in on their suspect. The landlady at an apartment building is all to eager to share her dislike for the suspected tenants.
After a search of the apartment with the landlady, a stakeout is set up. There’s gunplay, a foot chase, and tense moments as the cops gather up the criminals. well, at least some of them, but it won’t take long with police canvassing the area to get them all.
