Cathy is a professors wife. In voiceover they each take turns telling how attractive they think the other is. we learn that they have been married for 20 years, and their best man, Eric, was in love with her. After the wedding Eric disappeared and hadn’t been heard from since. Suddenly, Eric is back on the scene, invited to be a guest speaker on campus. Elliot isn’t worried, but should he be? They meet Eric at the train station, and get reacquainted over dinner. Skeletons from the past are dredged up, discussion of success and love are aired.
With so much water gone under the bridge, it raises forgotten memories, and the question of whether sparks of old flames still exists. Is Eric turning on the romance when Eliot has his back turned? why would Elliot put his friend up to charming his wife? Eric is tired of being used by both sides, and emotions pour out of the intellectual trio. But Eric was just acting… wasn’t he?
