When Joe Friday, and Frank Smith head out to question the witnesses, the details of the story develop. The kindly older woman seems an unusual person for a criminal, but Friday is on her trail. Joe and Frank go to a bar and talk about the case with their latest witness. It provides a clue for the cops to track their criminal to an address.
More solid evidence is turned up, and the chase grows more intense. Lillian Halstead is hauled in, but she has actually stolen that identity. With pressure applied, she cracks and admits all.
