Phil Harris had been playing his role as band leader fairly conservative. In this episode some of his developing character comes out when he takes to the parts he plays in the Minstrel show. Also an interesting take on a Romeo and Juliet theme gets squeezed in.
PS: Though a minstrel show may not be very politically correct by today’s standards, it had been a very common, and popular form of entertainment. At the time though, even critics of the day gave this episode less than desireable reviews. I think it’s a good show, but it may be a sign that even at the time, in 1936, that minstrel, and vaudeville style shows were dead, and a thing of he past.
