Now, let’s see what’s happening down in Pine Ridge. The big kidnap has gone down, and Abner is hiding in Lum’s house as the search is on. He’s hiding so well, that even Lum can hardly find him in the house. Lum brings word that Abner is the talk of the town. Lizabeth is mad, but more for the broken window than her husband being gone.
Witnesses are coming out of the woodwork with varying stories, to claim they saw things that never took place. Abner is a little indignant over the outright lies, but Lum is eating it up, since all the confusion just adds to the drama. The phone rings, and Lum handles the call withall due concern, but Abner can hardly keep from talking in the background.
Dick Huttleston and grandpap stop in, so Abner has to hide as Lum talks with them. Dick can’t understand why Abner was kidnapped when there are other, more important men in town. They speculate if it was done by amateurs, or professionals.
Grandpap agrees to pitch in to help Lum with the rolling store. Lum has to keep up appearances and make a show of looking for Abner, even though he grumbles about it as he leaves to join the search party.
