Previously in Pine Ridge, Lum’s movie theater has burned down, and he learned that he was covered for a host of liability options, but not for fire.
Today, Abner gets on the party line to share the week’s specials for the Jottem Down Store. Lum comes back to see if Abner needs help in the store. Especially after Cedric has been fired. Lum jshares how he managed to overlook getting fire insurance, and that after he paid all his bills up, he only has a few dollars left.
Will Abner be wise enough to catch all the hints that Lum is dropping his way? Lum is too proud to beg, but Abner is just too dense to put the hints together to make the hiring idea seem to be his own. Abner gets a little confused over the figures of speech that Lum tries to use to paint a picture of despair for Abner.
Eventually the thought process kicks in and Abner hires Lum on as clerk and delivery boy.
