A man approaches Chester, and insists on seeing Matt Dillon. He and his wife have a surprise in their wagon. They’ve somehow managed to apprehend an outlaw, the hard way. At least hard for the dead man. Once Matt returns to the office, he identifies the man, and it isn’t the intended bandit. The dead man bears a resemblance to the real bandit, but the homesteader is facing a murder charge of his own.
The homesteader tells his story, but Matt isn’t buying it. Matt’s troubles explode when the dead man’s partner rides to town looking for revenge. After a report of a shooting, Matt sorts out the aftermath.
The homesteader has another story ready. The man is abusive, and the woman is a facilitator, but Matt gets the real story this time. The man is still guilty of murder, but by now Matt is more concerned for the woman’s safety in the abusive relationship. Justice can be tough, but Matt’s the guy to make it happen.
