Pioneers faced many dangers that combined to fill their lives with hardship. It was the Lone Ranger, more than any other man to make the West a safe place to live.
A 9 year old set of twins watch their dad as he handles the horses on his ranch. As the boy and girl talk, we learn some of the trouble, and rivalry he faces. Horses from the herd are culled out, and a pet horse is to be sold. The disappointed kids appeal to their dad, but will he listen?
Hey, this sounds like the story behind, “My Friend Flicka.” In that story, the dad caved in, and the kid showed how responsible he was. (How warm and fuzzy. In this one though, dad sells the horse. Bummer.
Mom comes in to burst dad’s bubble and announce that the twins are missing. They went to try to get their pet horse, Toby. The kids don’t know what kind of hazards await them on the wild prairie. Namely harsh terrain, and a storm that’s brewing.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto manage to ride onto the scene, just in the nick of time. But wait! Our story is just beginning. There’s still plenty of loose ends to wrap up. Will the kids get their horse back? Will the rancher just let them have it? What about the thunderstorm that kicks up to drench the kids?
The parents nerves are frazzled and are desperate to think their babies are on their own in the wild. You know how it will end. The Lone Ranger saves the day in grand style, but ride along for the adventure in seeing how he does it, because there’s still a plot twist or two to work through. Sick kids, doctors, the bridge is out, a race against time, and a lesson to be learned by all.
