Hillbilly Boys – 2 Episodes. The show was started in 1931 with music provided by the Light Crust Doughboys. Around 1935 a reorganization took place, and the musical group reformed with some changes as the Hillbilly Boys. A band headed up by James Robert “Bob” Wills, with vocalist Leon Huff. W Lee O’Daniels was president of the Hillbilly Flour Company, and was the show MC. He used the radio show to promote his product, The show featured music, and occasional poems and helpful household tips, often written by O’Daniels, and letters sent in from listeners. The show launched the careers of the band members, and even helped to send O’Daniels to the governor’s mansion in Texas, and later to the Senate. The show was broadcast through powerful border stations, and blanketed much of the United States, and had a listenership across the country.
