Elizabeth Kemper is the recently widowed wife of John. As her health begins to fail, she has brought John’s sister Bertha and her daughter Celia to live with her, as well as her own sister Mary and her son Herbert. Bertha swears she has seen John, and he has told her to change the will that had cut her off from the estate. Celia doubts, but is no match to challenge her overbearing mother.

Herbert is doubtful, and comforts his mother, Mary, who is terrified of the ghostly claims of Bertha. The frightened Mary wants no part of the estate. Going to visit the family lawyer, Wentworth, and the family physician, Dr Martin, Herbert tries to learn all he can about John’s death in the car wreck. Who was he visiting on the day of his wreck? Where is he buried?

Will the weak hearted Elizabeth survive long enough to make changes to it? Despite the sightings, Herbert walks the estate to visit the family vault and see what he might learn there.

Wentworth arrives to change the will, and questions whether Elizabeth is sane in doing so. Secrets explode to the surface in confrontations and Bertha’s real involvement in the ordeal. After Herbert’s revelations, the Whistler has one more twist regarding Herbert’s activities.
