Pine Ridge has been honored for being the first T-Town. The first to have 100% of residents contribute to buying war bonds, thanks to the work of Lum and Abner. Today Mousey Gray is in the store to learn about the Golden Era Discussion Club that had been formed since he left for the Army.
When Abner enters, he seems particularly distraught. What’s wrong with his old dog, Blue? Did he run away? Bite somebody? Lum is out of guesses. Finally, the news is coaxed out of Abner, and he tells how Charlie Redfield came over to deliver the bad news.
It seems the Army is drafting dogs for military service. Lum assures his friend the government isn’t likely to take a tired out old dog like Blue. Abner is sure his dog will soon be a police dog, or called to some other military duty. Is Blue as smart as Abner makes him out to be? Will he be in the same class as Great Danes, and Doberman Pinchers? Will Blue have private affairs to settle up before going in? Does it involve returning a chewed up old baseball mitt?
