Greatest Story Ever Told – The Calling of Matthew. ep32, 470831

Wanting to have a regular social life for his family’s sake, Matthew wants to give up his career as a tax collector. His reputation as someone who is in league with the Romans is ruining his niece’s wedding. Can he make a clean break?

His Roman boss thinks its a joke, thinking there must be some false bookkeeping that he’s trying to hide. When Matthew insists he’s honest, he sets out to resign, and look for work elsewhere. Will anybody give him a job? Has his reputation already made him damaged goods? When he realizes he’s an outcast, Matthew goes back to his Roman boss, but now he has to do the same work for less pay.

An encounter with the Master finds Matthew in a new calling. He walks away from the tax tables once and for all. He meets, and is welcomed by the other disciples. The test comes when disgruntled, self righteous religious leaders confront the Master about the riff raft and tax collectors he’s hanging with. They get set straight when they’re told that its the sick who need a doctor, not the well.
