After weeks in space, and after a false contact by somebody pretending to be from the folks back on Earth, a couple spaceships join air locks to talk over recent happenings. The odd character, Whittaker is discussed. Anybody in his presence is plagued by fear and nightmares. More about his strange behavior comes out, and Jet Morgan wants to keep his activities on watch.
More weeks of quiet routine go by, and the space fleet is approaching the halfway mark to Mars. Alarms have been triggered, and a new potential danger looms. It seems to be ship#6, Whittaker’s spaceship that sped on ahead weeks earlier. Jet prepares to dock with them to see what the situation is. Put on the space suits and get ready for a space walk.
Should Jet really be surprised to find the place empty? What happened to the crew? The spaceship’s systems are checked out, and inventoried, and soon they are catching up to the rest of the fleet. Whittaker had been found unconscious, and when coming around mutters warnings to turn around and go home.
Jet has nightmares, Whittaker dies, but leaves mysteries and unanswered questions in his wake. A recorded message fills in some blanks, but more remain. Good news, a message from the home base on Earth comes through. Is it a real message this time? And what’s that tune that Lenny keeps singing to himself?
