Down Our Way – Fire Prevention Week. ep16, 1932

The rivalry between Ben and Ely sometimes gets on Jenny’s nerves. Can she help the two old gents work together in planning a fire prevention week? It would play into Ben’s strength as fire chief, and Ely’s strength as a civic organizer. The choir comes to practice, and sing, Hard Times Come Again No More.

The gang try to be helpful in plans for the event. Cliff sings, Tura Lura Lai. More ideas pour forth from the choir, but how will Ben take their advice? What about Ely? More practice seems called for, so Cliff and Mary sing, Lover Come Back to Me.

Through all the planning,it’s Ely who is feeling lonely and unloved. Will the smell of smoke cause Ben’s fireman’s instincts to kick in? Before any alarms are sounded though, the source of the fire needs to be found, and Ely manages to figure that one out.The choir wrap up with a hymn, Faith of Our Fathers.

Moral of the story: When a baby is sick you pat him on the stomach, when a man is sick you pat him on the back.
