Jubilee – Duke Ellington, Lena Horne. ep118, 450104.

Ernie Whitman is the bubbly host with the jive talking introductions. Duke Ellington talks with Ernie before he plays, Suddenly Jump. One of the Duke’s vocalists sings, I’m Beginning to See the Light.

Duke takes back over to perform his classic, It Don’t Mean a Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing. Lena Horne flirts with Ernie, and Duke then dedicates her song, I Didn’t Know About You. Lena follows it up with, I Get a Kick Out of You.

Duke plays, Middrift. Duke follows it with, Blue Skies.

PS: Excellent show, good audio quality. There’s just one problem, a minor one, but it’s a problem to me. Some of the files I have have their file names mixed up, so some of these maybe slightly out of order. That really isn’t a huge deal since most of these AFRS shows didn’t actually have an air date. Dates are approximate. Back in the day these shows made the rounds, and were hand carried from AFRS station to another, getting played when they could. Then, of course, the military kept archives of V-disks and other recordings for decades, to re-air when they had the need.
