An overview of Ray Bradbury’s new novel. We find a peaceful Martian home, but the complacent lifestyle is interrupted when strange dreams plague the lonely housewife. What does it mean? Can the jealous husband end it all when he takes matters into his own hands?
Later, we find that a raiding party of Earth men find a city that has been laid waste. Is it a time for celebration, or mourning? How did the destruction come? It seems to be the beginning of a new frontier for Earth.
Years pass, and the Martian frontier is booming. Still, trouble looms back on Earth. A family senses the coming danger, and flees to Mars to start a new life. Will others fare so well, or has atomic war spelled the end for humanity?
- Dimension X – There Will Come Soft Rain – Zero Hour. ep11, ep11, 500617 – A story that depicts the atomic ending to this saga, and an additional story of alien invasion.
- X Minus One – And The Moon Be Still As Bright. 560422 – The part of the saga where our space travellers find the vacant city.
Man first lands on Mars, with all it’s secrets to be revealed. That day has come as a rocket landing craft lands in the dark. April 20, 1987. Wow, so that’s when it was. Funny, I don’t remember that happening. Although I think I was out of the country at that time.
The captain of the Naval vessel prepares his crew for what to expect, and rules to follow once they open the airlocks and take their first steps on the Red planet. The astronauts nervously smoke cigarettes, and talk about their hometowns. now that’s intelligent, smoking in the high oxygen environment in their space craft.
The landing party exits. What will the trigger happy crew find? A regular old fashioned house, complete with crowing roosters, pianos, porch swings, and everything a hometown back on Earth would have. What logical reason could be behind this? Has the rocket ship went backward in time, and landed on the Earth of 1928?
One of the crew finds his grandparents, and they claim that they’ve been there since they died several years before. Is Mars heaven? Back at the ship the captain thinks they’re being overrun, but it’s a swarm of long dead relatives there to greet the crew, and welcome them. Reunions and celebrations are the word of the day. Everybody but the ship doctor seems to have found family members on Mars. It’s time to call it a night, but should the crew return to their ship, or just stay with the new found relatives.
In the wee hours of the night, the ship doctor and captain talk about the happenings. The doc hits on a theory of what’s going on, but will anybody believe him? Is there some kind of mind control trick going on? What will be the fate of the heros in the cfrew when the Martians show their true faces?2017-05-20
As a rocket crew explores space, they find that they aren’t the first ones to reach their new discoveries. Civilizations had risen, fallen, and by the time of their discovery had long ago died off. With the lost race cities in sight,, mechanical problems force a landing.
Stranded, and without parts, or radio signal to contact the base station, things look grim. Will good military discipline hold up as space fatigue sets in? Will the team be able to explore the lost city and learn about the people who once lived there?
If the city is abandonedm, what’s making that light in the distance? Is this some kind of altar, or temple? A strange kind of television set is found that seems to recieve signals from across the universe, and without the use of a transmitter. As the situation gets worse, will our crew survive? Will they discover the secret of that strange television, and of the lost race?
The last show that I know of in this series, and I had a time in finding this one.
Previously Buck and Barney had both taken their own mechanical moles underground, unknown to each other. Their exploration had brought them head to head, and almost led to them blasting each other. Now that they realize they are safe, Barney is upset to find his little pal gone. The worry is unfounded since Pete made his way through a different tunnel to find Wilma Dearing in her mechanical mole.
With everybody safe, and accounted for, Buck and Barney plan to finish their trip, and head back to the surface. Back on the surface with a successful mission complete, our heros get ready to report to the president. Word comes that they may be heading out on another adventure. One that’s more dangerous than any they’ve had before.2017-05-08

In this replay of a Retro Vault episode, Keith and the Retrobots present this suspense, sci-fi, comedy blend.
Word comes that a rocket from earth is to land on Mars. Calling on lowly escalator factory worker, Zeno, who works in the tread department, he is selected to carry out Plan X. What is plan X? As important as the mission, clearly even a lowly factory worker can handle it against the likes of the incoming earthlings.
Zeno, Jack Benny, greets the astronaut crew, who are stereotypically full of bravado, and just paranoid enough to think there could be a trap. Will they warm up to the mild mannered Zeno? Is he being softened up by the aliens from earth, and not inclined to carry out Plan X?
The supervisors are assured that Zeno has it under control. Nearing the end of the mission, the astronauts think Zeno will be a push over to take back to earth for what? To study… to hold as leverage in case the Martians aren’t so nice next time? And what about Plan X? How harmful can it be if little Martian kids are invoved?
Keith shares a little about the episode, comparing it to Jack’s infamous film, the Horn Blows at Midnight. Also he reads an article found at tralfaz.blogspot.com that deals with some of Jack Benny’s biggest frauds and myths about himself. How similar is the on air Jack Benny to the real Jack Benny?
There probably isn’t time, but the old fashioned Retrobot, who has been missing from the show for a long time, takes time to present a few moments with Abbott and Costello, with their guest Frank Sinatra, and cast member, Connie Haines.2017-02-28
The Merrymacks open with a few bars of Yip Ai Atti Ai Ay. Fred and Harry Vonzel share some alphabetic introductions and adlibs. Moving on to the Ipana News in Review, it features overcrowded rooming houses. Fred interviews a string of characters to illustrate the problem.
A precursor to Falstaff Openshre, Poet Thorndyke Swineberg returns to share a poem, the Crowded Rooming House. A brief drama about an actor enforces the rooming house problem.
The Merrymacks sing, The Gaucho Serenade.
Peter VanSeetin plays a musical transition, Cherry Berry Bin. Portland helps Fred greet their guest, and tells how she helped the merrymacks. They talk about leap year, the time when it was perfectly acceptable for a young, single woman to be so forward as to chase after a man, and propose marriage to him. The guest is a man who oversees the Statue of Liberty. Facts and trivia about the statue is shared.
Win Murray sings, I Thought About You.
After the Station break. Fred’s roundtable panelists include: a man in liquor sales from Jackson Heights, a woman in the importing business, and with time running short the third panelist isn’t fully introduced. The question is: With all the Mother In Law jokes out there, should the jokes be stopped and more respect given to mothers in law?
The Merrymacks sing, I’ll See You In My Dreams.
The Mighty Allen Art Players present a drama, Admiral Allen Was Living a Dogs Life So They Left Him at the Pole. Or, Life at the North Pole. A drama spoofing Admiral Perry, and his expedition to the North Pole. After a quick radio report from the admiral, we are taken behind the scenes to learn what it’s really like with the freezing team of explorers.
PS: I know the show title says, ‘South Pole’ but with the comedy references, either Fred Allen and his writers were mixed up, or the spoof is at the other end of the clobe. Last time I checked there were no Eskimos down South, just to mention one glitch.2017-02-09
Previously Doc and Lenny have made their break from the Martians, and are making a beeline to get back to Jet. Doc keeps up his voiceover narative as he tells about their activities in reuniting, and what comes next.
Some of the crew have fallen under the Martian mind control to the point of being beyond hope. Our heros, Jet, Lenny, Mitch, and Doc have recruited the man, Webster to help them confront the Martians. They have promised to take him back to Earth with them. They infiltrate, and explore one of the pyramid cities, and learn what the Martians are up to. Making bombers. It is revealed that some people are more susceptable to mind control than others, but the Martians have a place for all of the humans. How can Jet use this information to his benefit? Things may not be going well when our heros learn that the Martians already know of their presence.
Time for some evasive maneuvers. Can they make it back to their polar base of operations? The astronauts manage a takeoff, but are they home free yet? They are being pursued by a fleet of Martian sphere’s. In voiceover, Doc continues to fill in gaps, and how they reported back to Earth about their losses, the humans who are held on Mars, and the pending invasion.
Will they be believed? The many months of space flight is rushed over, and the remaining ships in the expedition prepare to land on the moon landing base. Doc keeps up his report to tell of the Martian invasion that was forced to take place earlier than expected, but we are left hanging because, of course, that’s a different story.2017-02-02
Previously, in a tense moment with the Martians, Jet manages to make a get away, but Doc and Lenny are forced to board the Martian spaceship. Jet makes radio contact with the base station at the polar ice cap, and tries to revive McClain, the crew member who fell under the Martian mind control. He doesn’t seem to be quite out of it yet though.
Doc provides voiceover narative as Jet coordinates his forces to search for Doc and Lenny. Will he be able to rescue his friends and crewmates? The scene changes to the Martian spaceship as it prepares to land. Submitting to the Martian mind control isn’t all that bad, is it?
The Martians reveal their secrets about Whittaker. Remember him? What is it that the people from earth do for the Martians? How do the Martians get their human captives? The doctor from the farmhouse is a mediator for the Martians, and tells about the pyramid cities, and the spaceships that are being built to make a fleet. A major invasion is being planned for 1986.
Seeing their chance, Lenny and Doc make their break. They make radio contact with Jet, but can they get a message back to Earth to warn people what the Martians are planning? The Martians fight back with their mind control powers. It’s looking bad. There’s only one more episode, I hope the crew can hold out.
