Working undercover in the Narcotics department, Joe Friday has caught the small fry in the drug ring, but now he's after the big fish. Reporting in at the squad room, he reviews the case with both the captain and his partner, Ben Romero. A portrait of the damage that drugs can do on it's users is presented. The team of cops discuss strategy behind using their information from their previous arrests to bring down the big man. An undercover operation is out of the question. Joe recaps the result of the 4 hour meeting, and describes the police action in tailing their man. Creative and elaborate stake outs are put in place. The ring leader didn't get to where he is by accident, and the cops have to play it careful and easy so as not to spook their suspect.

A vicious criminal has set up his narcotics operation in town. Joe Friday knows who he is, but he has to get proof to haul him in. Joe makes a phone call to tell his worried mom about the dangerous mission he is about to go on, and that he'll be alright. He surrenders his badge and identification as a cop so he can go undercover.

After a robbery two criminals are apprehended. One escapes, but one gets away. To top it off, one is a friend of Joe Friday and he has to send him to prison. In the scuffle, Ben Romero has been shot, but it isn't a serious wound. Joe tells about his old Army buddy that was caught, and his fall onto bad luck. They talk, but will Joe be enticed to help get his buddy off the hook? Not likely.
