I love reading these!

Okay, I don't think Vic melted at all. We have seen other times where he was genuinely mad and got on the telephone (the incident with Gumpox's blue eyes and him wanting to come over to talk about them comes to mind..) I do believe that Vic is generally a softie but there are other times - especially with Fred, who he doesn't really like - that he gets mad. I feel he called him up and let him have it!

Comedy works best when situations are realistic, but just wacky enough to do that thing you really wanted to but before modesty and restraint kept you from doing it. It can also be from a tragic event or character who takes the abuse as the butt of a joke so no real harm befalls the main character. Hank is like that. He's a characagure. He is someone designed to always be on Sade's bad side, and just plain creeps her out. He has his hooks in her because nearly everybody else loves the guy. Vic is his ffriend and lodge brother. Hank hangs out in the same circles as uncle Fletcher, and is admired by Rush.

Hank is everything Sade hates. He's always jobless, or at least under employed. He offers no financial security, he's always in debt to Vic, and thus irresponsible. I think he secretly has a crush on Sade that keeps him lurking near by, but if so it never is revealed by Paul Rimer.

Hank is the punchline of a running gag, and because of that his character isn't really developed further than being two dimensional. There isn't much else I can say about him than that.

Hey Jimbo, this is one that didn't quite make our top 5 list, but it may have made the cut as an honorable mention.

For sure, it's one that epitomizes the tender relationship between Vic and Sade. Or lack thereof. What I mean is, that they really do love each other, but their love tanks are filled in different ways, and they don't always hit the mark in meeting the other's needs. Vic is a big kidd, who needs his ego stroked to feel loved. Amazingly, Sade never does this well. I have never heard her comment on Vic's blue eyes, heart shaped face, or his deep sonorous voice. Or pay him hardly any such mushy compliments. She certainly does have a knack for knowing when other women are turning Vic's head.

Sade needs security and stability, and Vic does a good job at providing for her. It's only those times when he lets his inner child out, says silly things, and (gasp) lets his ego respond to strokes that he gets from outside the home. Sade really could go about claiming her marital territory in a better way. One that wouldn't belittle Vic so badly, and one that would show him that he already has all that, and more right home with her. The situation could lend itself to being both comical, and heartwarming, instead of belittling and nagging.

Good call on the title difference. I have to say that I don't know a lot on the Hermits Cave, or its history. I got this collection as part of a 10 DVD set from Dennis Humphreys, and his Radio Memories Network. I'm having fun with it as I'm hearing most of the shows in the series for the first time myself.

If you are interested in that 10 disk set, it's no longer available. Dennis now has other products that he offers that range from a simple mp3 player, cram packed full of OTR, and vintage music, to external Terabyte drives overflowing with more classic radio than you could hope to listen to in a lifetime.
Check it out at: http://oldtimeradiodvd.com.

Vic's desire to tinker with clocks might come from the need to express his ability outside of his usual accounting job. To conquer an intricate machine, rather than the mundane crunching of numbers. A matter of being faced with a high tech machine, and being it's master, rather than having some dumb, inanimate machine mastering the human.

Machines can do work that involve a lot of horsepower. Steam engines, tractors, pile drivers, and the like. A watch, or clock is such a tiny, delicate little thing. It's all about the engineering, the design, and having the smarts to figure it all out. Vic is a smart guy, and even without specialized training, he considers himself qualified to tackle the job.

It does take a certain amount of specialized training though. I think Vic would realize that if he considered his own job. Anybody can do math, but it takes a certain amount of training to know all the techniques of good accounting.

Even in Mark Twain's short story about a mishap with a valuable, and well working watch when it entered the hands of watch repairmen. Even a trained watch repairman can go overboard, and ruin a good thing if he isn't careful. Read it here: http://www.readbookonline.net/readOnLine/1565/

Vic has a bit of a problem with compulsive behavior. He goes overboard on certain topics, not learning from his mistakes, or those times when he has crossed a line. Sade regulates him when she can, but she can't be there round the clock. If she isn't there to stop him, Vic is sure to make a shot at getting that wide brimmed hat, and embarrassing himself in front of his neighbors. Vic is prone to go overboard on spending money and time on lodge business and trinkets. When Sade's not around, Vic revels in the flirtatious advances of those secretaries at work, only to catch it from Sade when she finds out. And she always finds out.

That obsessive behavior is the reason Vic can't leave any defenseless timepiece alone.

I suppose everybody has their pet peeves, and things we have addictive behavior about. It's just one of those absurd things in the world of Vic and Sade that make the characters so normal.

I have to add. I got a kick out of the sponsor, and their push to buy their product for Christmas. It had to be a delicate matter for them. After all the sponsor sells coal. Coal and sticks is what the bad little boys and girls get for Christmas. They can't just come out and suggest you buy it for someone, it implies they've been bad. On a brighter side. It is Blue Coal, not the regular old black coal. Listen in and see how the coal company got around a negative selling point to ask for holiday sales.

I recieved a correction from a favorite fan. A favorite fan is somebody who takes the time to email me, or who makes a comment on the web site.

Larry says:
"I like the site. One correction. On the 1942 Fred Allen/ Roy Rogers episode the singer is Jane Pickens (not "Fisher"). Jane Pickens was a radio performer of the '40s who became well known for her contributions in the '50s and '60s to the annual Cerebral Telethon telecasts on WOR-TV, NY."

Thanks for the input. I try to practice good spelling, but names are Kryptonite to me. I have to rely on listening to what the actors say, and sometimes they don't pronounce things well. In this case it was just me not listening very close.

Keep the comments coming.

Funny episode. I was a little girl in the sixties and the only exposure I had to Jack Benny then was the few episodes he did on The Lucy Show. He was amusing to me, but I didn't have a strong feeling about him. As I've been listening to otr the last few years, I've really grown to love his humor.
On many other otr shows, I either tolerate or even fast forward through the opening from the host, but yours, Keith, are always a funny addition to the show and sometimes are even funnier than the show. Love your humor! Thanks for all you do - Pam

Hi, this is Keith wearing my site admin hat. Sorry I got back to your comment so late.

I can agree lGildie's friends changing their plans indeed shows a deeper friendship than the show sometimes lets on. More often than not, Bullard is Gildy's arch rival, and they don't seem to get along on the surface. To me they aren't quite as close as Gildy and Fibber were before he left to take care of Leroy and Marjorie. He and Fibber could fight just like He does with Bullard, but with Fibber, we saw them doing things like playing checkers, or other things a couple of buddies might do. Gildy never does that with Bullard. At least I've not found an episode where he does. I'll allow that I could be very wrong on the matter.

I like hay rides. I've been on sleigh rides. I can enjoy fun in the snowy, wintery weather. I suppose my original comment came from the fact that at that very moment in time, we had some illness in the house, and there ain't no way for family or friend that I would have gone out and made health matters worse.

Glad to have your comments. Keep on listening to the shows, reading the pages, and write more.

Actually, I think I might have tracked down the 7th episode of this part of Buck Rogers. I don't have it yet though. As soon as I can get tucked away on my overflowing hard drive, I'll get it uploaded. Besides what I've already posted, I'm not aware of any further Buck Rogers shows. I'm always on the look out for new stuff. er.. new old stuff?

Keith, you are one of the reasons - one of the people for whom I do the audio strip. You and other people who are blind mentioned not being able to read the comic strip. I couldn't let that happen. Let me mention that I do not claim to duplicate the great voices and characters anywhere near as well as Mr. Goff and Mr. Lauck, but I hope the audio versions come across well enough for folks to follow the script. I always add a little extra narration so visual gags make sense. In essence, I try to make them like miniature radio shows. Thank you Keith, for mentioning this, and also for all the advice you've given me on the NLAS web site, which hasn't had much work lately, but I will post a Christmas feature soon.

By the way, I'm working on a Christmas edition of the "Lum and Abner" comic strip. It will have an audio explanation posted along with it. I think Helping Hands is going to release the second CD of the Audio Journal this Christmas in conjuction with an event. Have you heard about it?

Thanks for the good words. I'm honored to get the notice of two people with such close ties to the Lum and Abner program. The Christmas episode became an immediate favorite of mine from the first time I heard it.

Among all the various christmas specials that were repeated, this has to be my top pick. The whole Lum and Abner series definitely ranks in my top five for old time radio shows. Up there with Jack Benny, Gunsmoke, and a couple others I don't want to mention at the moment for fear of having to decide on a top five. :-)

I enjoyed listening to the Christmas program again. My grandfather was Chet Lauck and he told us about the original broadcast many times and what a tremendous response it got from so many radio listeners. They did the same show every Christmas thereafter.

Thank you for sharing this great recording with your readers/listeners and thanks for keeping the memory of Lum & Abner alive.

Yeah, it's a shame that much of the entertainment media from that era is lost. Old films that weren't reserved well, and lost to time. Old radio shows that were destroyed after playing, or just considered worthless after TV came along. You would think that libraries would have been more diligent though with preserving newspapers.

Did you know about the latest project with Lum and Abner? Donnie Pitchford has been using old Lum and Abner scripts that have no audio recordings anymore, and using his artistic skills has made the old gents into a cartoon strip. You can check it out at <a href="http://firstarkansasnews.net/lum-and-abner" rel="nofollow">the Lum and Abner page on First Arkansas News.</a> It comes complete with Donnie, and I believe he has some help from Singing Sam Brown in creating voices for an audio comic. Complete with theme music and sound affects.

I mention all that to place yet another shameless plug for the inovative project, but also, if you have the old cmic strips of Buck Rogers... How about it? Read them into a tape recorder or into your cell phone's voice recorder, or something. I'll post them for you if you want. I know everybody isn't as tallented as Donnie is, but it would be cool to have the comics come to life that way.

I'm amazed you have as many as you do. I collected a bunch of the Buck Rogers newspaper comic strips from the mid 1930's to early 60's, from electronic scans at public libraries. Unfortunately the quality is only passable. I have quite a few, but it's depressing how many of them are missing, and possibly lost to time.

Hey Keith, you know that missing show in the Flash Gordon series? The one you had the same show with two different dates? I think I know what happened.

I was just previewing the next show, which is labeled for yet another date in the future, but it fits in the story line between today's episode, and the previous one.

Don't know if it's too late to fix it. Just wanted to point it out so watchers of the show notes will know what is going on.
