As Bob's arrival grows closer, egos inflate. Dick Mallard is yet another publicit manager who arrives to lay out the red carpet, and confuse Lum and Abner with press jargon and slang.

The questions from the press agent plays right into Lum's ego. But wait! The agent claims that it's Cedric who is the focus of the visit.

Note Franklin Graham is once again the guest voice actor portraying the press agent.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Now that the arrangements for the arrival of Bob Hope have been put into motion, there's still a burning question that remains. Why is Bob Hope coming to Pine Ridge? Abner talks with grandpap about the arrangements, and the publicity agent, Mr hatstaff.

First, our heros expect a visit from Bob Hopes manager, Mr Diamond. Lum wonders if the visit is due to his appearing in a Midwest Grocer and Feed store magazine. Does Bob want to learn the grocery business as a second sideline? World hunger is still a big concern in the post war era, and a phone call from Sister Simpson is an excuse for Lum to pitch the need for Americans to do their part.

Mr Diamond enters, but doesn't seem to know what Bob's visit is about either. Is there a hospital arond Pine Ridge? Is Bob going to entertain there? Is there any theaters for Bob to perform his act in, or some other venue?

Despite his failed efforts, Diamond thinks the appearance is all a big mistake. Will his phone call to Hollywood keep Bob Hope away? Stay tuned for the Monday episode, and all will be revealed.

Note: Jerry Hosner and Franklin Graham are the guest voice actors who portray Bob Hopes manager and publicity agents.</itunes:summary>

Mr Hatstaff claims to be the publicity agent for Bob Hope. It's the kind of thing that anybody might think is a practical joke. Despite his efforts to prove that he's on the up and up, our heros don't want to be lured in as sucker to some sort of phoney scheme.

The telephone interupts the lengthy discussion. Hatstaff desperately arguing his point, and Lum trying to keep from being taken by a travelling scammer. Who's on the phone? What will it take to convince Lum and Abner they're in store for a visit from the world famous radio and movie comedian?

Note: Franklin Graham is Mr Hatstaff, a frequent voice actor on the show. He's the one who does extra voices on the show that aren't done by Chet Lauck and Tuffy Goff. . In this short story ark, Frank Graham will be joined by Jerry Hosner as another of Bob Hopes publicity men who pave the way for the big visit.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The grab bag sale idea that Lum had has seemed to run its course, but due to over zealous ordering, more damaged cans are delivered. How will they be able to sell off their over abundance of damaged cans, and cans with missing labels?

As they discuss their problems at their overstock, Cedric enters with a distraction. A telegram arrives to tell about a mysterious visitor. What does he want? What important business does Mr Hatstaff want to conduct in town?

Lum has decided to donate his food stock to a charitible cause. It's only when he has committed himself that he contacts the wholesaler. The man confirms the code numbers on the bottoms of the cans is a way to look up what the unlabeled cans contain. With world hunger running rampant in war torn countries, it's just the right thing to do to donate food.

Note: Lum uses a phrase that hasn't been used much, if at all before this. It will be used more as the show goes on. Bored for the Simples. It's a phrase that expresses that he's feeling pretty stupid. It comes from an old medical practice. Before we had reliable pharmacies, people often grew their own herbs for simple first aid needs. The simples. Sort of an old fashioned version of what we might now call over the counter drugs. Here's the wierd part. To get the medicine, the simples, to work as fast as possible, it was a common practice to drill a hole in your head, and put the simples right in there. To be bored for the simples was a way for a person who suffered from a sickness to get a quick and fast acting treatment for their troubles.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Another resurrected episode from the Vaults of the Retro Radio Podcast. Visit the early days of the Retrobots with episode 2.

Horlicks, for a light meal that’s easy to digest. No more indigestion from a heavy lunch, and such an aid to weight control.

With the end of the oil boom in Pine Ridge, Lum and Abner need a new enterprise to earn a living. They decide to open a matrimonial bureau. Lum practices officiating a marriage ceremony. This business idea must be a good one, since Squire has come back around to try to partner up with Lum and Abner. If only Lum could find that contract he signed with Squire that frees him from responsibility from that oil well mess. The guys wouldn’t have to worry about being sued by Squire.

Horlicks drama: Mom and daughter share a few moments to glory in gladness that Horlicks to help children to grow big and strong.

PS: Believe it or not, the Horlicks product is still around, although not so well known in the United States. It is more popular in Brittain and India, and still is being plugged as a health drink that helps you to relax and sleep better at night.</itunes:summary>

After a rift between himself and Lum and Abner, grandpap began coaching others on how to tell what was inside the unlabeled cans. The novelty is wearing off, and Lum discusses the matter with Abner. Even with the sale coming to an end, curiosity burns as Lum and Abner remain mystified at how grandpap could tell what was inside the cans.

Abner manages to stumble on the secret, but can it be such a simple answer? Cedric is on hand to help verify that it could be possible.

Will Lum and Abner be able to spring a trap for grandpap, and get him to make a wrong guess? Will their careful plan manage to backfire on them, and be left with more damaged cans than they can hope to get rid of?</itunes:summary>

It has nearly ruined the success of the grab bag sale, and been the cause of some bad blood between grandpap, and Lum and Abner. Lum has threatened an injuction against grandpap to keep him out of the store, but it was just an empty threat. Now that grandpap has made himself unwelcome, he hasn't been back, but now other people have had a run of luck in guessing what's in the cans.

Mousey Gray enters to make a guess, and walk away with a couple free cans. Does he know the secret of the guessing game? Is the code numbers printed on the bottom of the can the way to tell what's inside? Is it just a fluke of the law of averages? A law that gets Abner a little confused.

Cedric enters, guesses right, but will he expose the secret? After more confusing talk about laws of nature, Lum and Abner discover that grandpap is behind the run of luck. He's hiding outside, and giving tips to customers who enter.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>With their successful sale of selling their damaged canned goods, Lum has went to buy all the damaged cans from the wholesaler that he can get. So far, the only person who has managed to guess the contents of the cans correctly has been grandpap. What's his secret? Will he walk off with all the inventory of damaged cans for free?

Lum thinks it's just a run of good luck, but Abner thinks its magic. Abner goes into detail over grandpap's feats at guessing. The old gent doesn't even touch, or shake the cans. All he does is call out the name, and that's what's inside the can every time.

Lum still thinks their idea of the grab bag sale is so good that it could spark a chain of stores, and shares a little about his visit to the wholesaler. Grandpap is back, and this time he has a wheel barrow to tote away his winnings from his guess work. Will he be a welcome customer, or will he be turned out of the store? Will Abner ever learn grandpap's secret? Lum uses his power as Justice of the Peace to bring up a legal injunction to keep grandpap out of the store.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The terms of Lum's big sale idea for the unlabeled cans is to sell them for a quarter a can. If you can manage to guess the contents of the can, before you open it, it's free. Of course, you need to bring in your own mason jar to empty the opened can into, and take the contents home. Grandpap quietly reads the almanac as Lum and Abner tell about the success of the sale idea.

Lum is concerned over Abners enthusiasm when customers make a bad guess, and have to pay for their can. Grandpap claims he can tell what's inside, and when US Quincy enters to make a guess, he seems to prove his point.

What exactly did Mr Quincey buy? Even when the can is opened, it's still a mystery. The sale is such a success, the store may be out of cans by the end of the week. Should Lum buy more cans, and rip the labels off so they can keep the sale going? Lum heads to the wholesaler, and grandpap demonstrates his technique of guessing to Abner. How did he do it?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Enjoy this show from the Vault of Retro. Besides the classic radio, catch a glimse of how Keith and the Retrobots sounded in their first season in podcasting.

From an unknown date thought to be in 1933. One of the oldest surviving recordings from Lum and Abner. Sponsered by Ford.

As we look in on Pine Ridge tonight, we find the school house all decked out and ready for the big dance. Lum announces the festivities and that the Friday night format is a regular fixture. The band plays a fanfare and Lum talks with Abner just before a a yodeling tune is presented.

After a few moments of joking around between Lum and Abner, a nice harmonica tune is played. Lum introduces the next singer who sings in a clear baritone voice, Home on the Range.

Lum calls on the next group, a woman’s quartet to sing, Bird in a Gilded Cage. Lum and Abner follow up by doing some more joking around, then invite a very young Francis Langford on stage.

Francis sings, Young and Healthy. The song ends, and so does the show.

PS: Francis Langford was a popular singer, and though at this time she was fairly unknown, she would have been 20 years old at the time of this recording, she would have a long singing career. Francis was also known for her making many USO tours with Bob Hope to entertain the troops just 10 years later during World War 2. According to Wikkipedia, her career spanned from 1932 to 1956, and she passed away at the age of 92 in 2005. In addition Frances grew up in the Mulberry, Florida area, a tiny community near Lakeland. She attended Lakeland High School. Langford originally trained as an opera singer. While a young girl she required a tonsillectomy that changed her soprano range to a contralto. As a result, she was forced to change her vocal style to a more contemporary big band, popular music style. At age 17, she was singing for local dances. Cigar manufacturer Eli Witt heard her sing at an American Legion party and hired her to sing on his local radio show. While singing for radio during the early 1930′s, she was heard by Rudy Vallee, who invited her to become a regular on his radio show. From 1935 until 1938 she was a regular performer on Dick Powell’s radio show. From 1946 to 1951, she performed with Don Ameche on The Bickersons.

The labels are back on the cans, which has Lum pleasantly surprised, but Abner won't tell his secret. Have they put the right labels back on the right cans? Should they take them all off again?
What our guys need is some kind of x-ray machine. Barring that, I think they should just have a big "Mystery Can" sale. After a telephone call from Charlie Redfield, Lum gets the same brainy idea.</itunes:summary>

Should they just throw away their inventory, and replace it with fresh cans? Lum realizes the wastefulness of that act, and it becomes a small pitch for world hunger that many war torn nations faced in the months after the end of World War 2. But how will they learn what's inside the cans without opening them?

Abner tries to guess the contents of cans by the sound made by the sloshing contents by shaking them. Is he right?

Note: In Lum's surprise, and thinking Abner was responsible for the cleaned can labels, e calls him a half witted numbskull. Though those terms rarely appear in the show, the use of calling someone a half wit is a common expression for those folks in the world of Vic and Sade.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Grandpap and Abner discuss Lum, and his showing off by giving out autographs. According to Lum, the concert that Kaye Kyser just gave was all due to their long time friendship. Not due to a long string of errors that got them together.

Lum enters and tries out his jazzy lingo that rubbed off from his time with Kaye Kyser. The latest craze for Lum is to put together his own band. Who would he get? Grandpap and Abner offer up a littany of local names of musical tallent, and the instruments the play.

Lum storms out, but after a scene change we find Mousey talking to Cedric. He was left in charge of cleaning up the shelves, and has done such a good job that the labels are gone, and cans polished to a high gloss.

PS: Lum and Abner end up by giving a quick blurb to pitch their latest movie, to be released in theaters soon.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Lum's big plans seem to be falling through when his steam shovel hasn't arrived yet. The pressure is on when Abner enters to announce their visitor has arrived, and when he pops into the Jot 'Em Down store we learn that Kaye Kyser is the big shot. Lum still thinks he's the big time shipyard builder, and confusion ensues.

All Kaye really wants is a potted plant, not a factory. I bet you never saw that one coming, did you? (says the podcaster with tongue firmly in cheek).

Lum's preparations overwhelm Kay Kyser, and rightly so, but will Lum get around to figuring it all out? All of Lums plans to acquire land, and other preparations keep falling through, making him frustrated. I'm sure that once he discovers the truth behind the identity of the bandleader, he'll be a lot more grateful.

Kaye is only after collecting flowers that grow in the local area. It takes him using a few of his radio catch phrases to give Lum and Abner a wake up call. At least the gathered crowd at the bandstand won't be disappointed when Kaye's band cuts loose to entertain them. Though we don't hear the concert, we learn that Lum's luck has turned around for him.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>After a lost letter hinted at prospects of new manfacturing business in town, Lum has amplified it into a big ship yard that is to come. He reviews the heavy equipment and real estate he has llined up for the large budget affair. Abner scoffs at Lum's speech preparation for the gala ground opening.

The party line buzzes with news of the expected big surprise, although Abner remains skeptical. Lum envisions not only a shipyard, but a tennament of prefabricated houses for factory workers, which is a topic that confuses Abner.

Seeking a little verification on what was in the lost letter, Lum is upset when grandpap remembers even less about it than he could before. Will the letter be found? Will Lum step up his big time plans?</itunes:summary>

Lum alerts Squire Skimp to see what real estate is available. Images of production lines, and booming economy run through Lum's mind. Since there actually isn't a Chamber of Commerce, the concept of how Lum has involved himself confuses Abner.

Lum arrives on the idea of a ship building plant for Pine Ridge, and Abner is rightly confused when he wonders how ocean liners will make it to the sea. Other facets of the ship building trade becomes a challenge for Lum to describe to Abner. Things like christening the ship, sliding it out of dry dock, and even a ground breaking ceremony.</itunes:summary>

Grandpap enters with a letter. It's official business for Lum, as head of the Chamber of Commerce, but curiosity weakens the will power, and grandpap convinces Abner to open it.

It sounds pretty important, but a distraction causes grandpap to misplace the letter. Can he remember what it said? Will there be new industry in Pine Ridge soon?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Though the chest of Confederate money that Lum and Abner found is worthless as currency, it still holds some value for a collector. The trouble is that they gave it all to Cedric, who has been using it to trade with his friends.

Grandpap has been keeping an eye on the store, and hears from Abner about the quest to gather up the money that Cedric has spread through the town. It's only worth a penny on the dolllar, but that still represents $3000 if it can all be collected.

Abner's plan could cost more than it's worth to get the money back, but Lum entrs with news that most of it has been found. He confuses Abner on how the money is to be split out between them. A last minute secret could ruin our heros dreams though.</itunes:summary>

There is indeed money in the box, sure enough, and in the neighborhood of $300,000. The happhy moment is broken when Lum notices the cash is Confederate money, and worthless.

With the celebration over, it's back to the regular grind in the Jot 'Em Down store where Lum tells grandpap all about the lesson that was learned. Might there still be hope in fixing up antique furniture? A phone call reports to Lum their money might be worth something to a collector, if they can only get it all back from Cedric.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The matter of catching Clyde the mouse turns into an obsession with Doctor Roller.

Lum gets onto Abner for his interference that caused the explosion of pest control chemicals. They discuss the aftermath of the explosion. Still, Doctor Roller the pest controller isn't discouraged.
The exterminator turns to more destructive measures in his quest to concquer that one single mouse. Lum has had enough, and would rather have the mouse than the demolition job Doctor Roller is carrying out on the store.

It's going to cost Lum and Abner more to get rid of their exterminator, and do repairs than any damage that the mouse could do in a life time. The determined pest controller refuses to stop until he catches that mouse. His reputation is at stake.

PS: Howard McNear is the guest voice to portray the obsessive Doctor Roller.</itunes:summary>

Coming face to face with Doctor Roller, Abner frets as the exterminator enters the store, hoping to claim victory over the mouse. Will Clyde outsmart Dr Roller, and be cause for Abner to celebrate? Will the exterminator call out his big guns?

With a little sabotage from Abner to Doctor Rollers pplan, he might create more problems than the little mouse would do on his own.</itunes:summary>

Sending Abner off on an errand, the exterminator enters to talk to Lum about a few details of his business. Will Lum be impressed by the trivial adventures of the pest control trade? Doctor Roller, the pest controller is bent on hunting termites, and a host of other vicious critters, and is taken aback to learn that his sole prey is a single mouse. Isn't there something more elaborate for him to hunt?

Lum plays up the terrors of the mouse to make it seem worth the exterminators while, but can he still keep the matter secret from Abner?

Lum sees it as a victory for the men though, and as he gloats over his self declaired accomplishment, Grandpap enters to share how he has been settling back into a domestic routine. <itunes:summary>After moving town records to their hilltop camp site, Lum calls a meeting to discuss the victory, and possible set backs of the deed.

Dick Huddleston isn't concerned over the civic records, but Post Office records are Federal Property. There's a postal inspector due in town any day, and the federal offense might damage all the efforts the men have taken to win the town back from the women. Will all their suffering be for nothing?

The guys have about had enough of roughing it in the wilderness. Squire examines the merits of returning the post office, the defining institution that identifies a town. Even with moving the records, it still hasn't found the women crawling up the hill to the new seat of Pine Ridge government to beg the men to come back. Has their stay in the woods served its purpose, and run its course?

It looks like it's time to march back into Pine Ridge as proudly as they marched out. What kind of greeting will await the men? Will a new battle ground soon emerge on the streets of Pine Ridge? Get ready to man your battle stations!</itunes:summary>

Abner gets a little confused on the strategy of the night time raid, figring that if you're going to steal a town, why not go for a big city like St louis? Or Chicago? . Hey, that does make sense. You'd even get a baseball team or two in the process. Cedric joins the team to handle the heavy work.

With the night patrol on their mission, Lum and Squire sit around the campfire, wondering what could be taking so long. Has there been an unplanned difficulty? Even Dick Huddleston has some doubts that the plan might not have been so well thought out. Even if the men can acquire the records to move the town, what's the next step? Will the women go for making the move
When Abner returns he has word of not only moving the government records, but the post office records as well. According to Dick, moving Federal records of a post Office is a serious Federal offense. Uh-Oh.

PS: That post office idea of Abner's is actually a good one. It's how the town of Wauters became known as Pine Ridge back in 1936. The difference is that one followed proper procedure, and not a raid in the night. Oopsie.</itunes:summary>

Before Abner can get too confused over it, Cedric enters with news about his pending marriage. He never ingtended to propose to the gal, but now he's trying to act crazy so he can prove he was insane. Will it be the proof that he needs to back out of his breach of promise suit? Does he really need to act all that hard?

It looks like Cedric is in deep trouble. Is there anything Lum and Abner can do to bail him out? Who is the mysterious woman known only as, "W"? Is there a lesson to be learned for Cedric?

In the second half, Cedric is Kidnappped. 421217:

It's Cedric's fatal day, and it appears his carefree bachelor days are over. Join Lum, Abner, and Cedric in the feed room as they discuss the situation in the Jot 'Em Down store. Cedric is all slicked up in his fancy suit, and facing the rality of giving up pinball to settle down to a job, and supporting a family.

Grandpap enters to announce the organ is broken. With no organist, Abner may have to sing a wedding song, but he can't do it alone. Maybe Cedric will lend a hand. Lum is to officiate the ceremony, and Cedric has a last moment spell of cold feet. He worries that if he gets married, Clarabelle won't go out with him any mlore. Huh?

It's amazing how that wedding song sounds just like, They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree.

Will Cedric go through with the wedding? Will Winifred Redfield finally get her man? The lights go out. A commotion ensues, and when the lights go on Cedric is missing, and a note is left in his place to claim that he is kidnapped.

Bonus Tracks:
Tune Wranglers. They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree.
Bill Boyd and his Cowboy Ramblers. Red Lips.

Note: Though this is a typical way to abruptly end a story arc of Lum and Abner, before moving on to something new, this saga actually does continue a little bit.

As the story progresses, the kidnappers are revealed to be some of Cedrics friends, trying to rescue him from his fate. Cedric isn't quite out in the clear yet, and it takes a case in court to settle the matter. It doesn't look good for him, but also in typical Lum and Abner style, and after digging the hole they put him in even deeper, Cedric has a last moment rescuer that nullifies the case. The whole thing gets thrown out of court, and Cedric gets to remain a bachelor.

PS: I had some technical difficulty in getting this one out. Microphone troubles led to having the Retrobots take over the show. They can be handy to have around sometimes.</itunes:summary>

Join Lum and Abner as they form strategies with grandpappy Spears. The men have been forced out of town, and find themselves camping. Will the women realize that without the presence of their men, that things will collapse around them? Maybe the guys ought to form their own woman-less town?

Caleb Wehandt joins the small group with a different sort of plan. Based on a situation in other states where a hostile take over raid was made to steal away governmental records, and move a capitol to another town, the gents begin a plan to do the same to move Pine Ridge to their camp site location in the woods. Yeah! YThat ought to teach those uppity womenfolk.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The phantom author has been secretly delivering chapters of a mystery manuscript to Lum and his new publishing house. Today he has promised to reveal his identity if Lum will be in the store at midnight. Since Abner has disappeared at the reading of the latest reading of the manuscript, it has Lum and Cedric spooked.

At the Jot 'Em Down store, a masked figure approaches, and Mousey reveals his identity, and explains his pen name. What about Abner? How did he disappear, and where did he go? He explains it all, and we learn more about Mouseys secret life as an author.

Listeners will remember some earlier items of the mystery. The missing clock where money was hidden, ghosts that appeared and disappeared, and more spooky happenings. Abner and Mousey reveal all the secrets, both that happened in the real world of Pine Ridge and in the storybook world of the phantom author. Is it the kind of story that Lum will publish? There's still one more secret that needs to be exposed.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Taking time away from his quest from publishing a great novel, Lum puts the printing press to work with a job that actually makes a little money. He and Abner talk about a recent rash of robberies, and worry that their money will be safe until they can pay their bills at the wholesale company. Suddenly their front door bell rings, and an intruder enters. Is it the robber? Are they going to be safe? Nothing is taken, but a package is left.

It's a manuscript from a phantom author. It's a curious situation, but the mystery story gets hold of Lum, and draws him into it. Has he found his first author that wilkl put his publishing house on the map? The tale is one full of chills, and thrills, and things that go bump in the night. Abner is soon fearful of every sound in the store as they read the manuscript through the late hours of the evening. Maybe it's all just a ruse to let the robber sneak in to do his dastardly deeds.</itunes:summary>

Even if Lum can prove Squire's shady doings in the deal, will he be able to get out of the sale on the property? <itunes:summary>Lum still seeks a worthy manuscript for his new publishing house, and Abner frets over the bills of the Jot 'Em Down store. We find them in the store, reading a letter for Lum. It claims that certain dramatic events occured right in Pine Ridge some years ago. Just after the Civil War, a treasure trove of jewels was buried in a yard in town. Where, where, where? Abner seems to know, but the family mentioned hasn't lived in town for years.

Who has that property now, and how can Lum manage to buy it? Squire enters, and of course he's the one who Lum has to deal with about the property in question. Get ready for some big time wheeling and dealing action as Squire and Lum match wits to get the best deal. Can Lum keep his intentions for the land secret, to keep Squire from jacking up his prices? Can Squire interest Lum in some other properties?

The deal goes down, but Abner points out something that hints that Squire has won this battle.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Lum has decided not to pursue a career as an author, but he still wants to focus on the literary field. He feels there's more to be made in the publishing business. What does this mean for the future of the grocery store? Mousey enters with hopes of being the first author of the Ed'ards and E'dards Publishing Company. Will his book of poems be marketable?

Sister Simpson gets the run around when she tries to put in her order, and Lum tries to make himself out to be more important than he is. Mousey recites a sample of his poetry, about his mother the blacksmith. He has one about a Hoot Owl, and it's only 29 stanzas long. That phone call with Sister Simpson seems a little more interesting at this point.

The web of lies to build Lum's self importance seems to be catching up with him as the persistent Sister Simpson keeps calling back. Will the old gal get satisfaction over her complaint? Will Mousey get he chance to recite his poetry? Lum and Abner leave, and leave Mousey and Sister Simpson to talk together on the phone.</itunes:summary>

Responding to the questionaire of writing skills, Lum tries his hand at a little picturesque speech. Given a group of characters, what kind of dialog might Lum write for them? Abner and Cedric do their part to help and inspire him.

In reading some of the fine print of the literature from the school, Lum has a change of heart. What could have scared him away from his new career as an author?</itunes:summary>

Good news arises when a shopping list of goods is found. It was left while Abner dozed. Who left the sizeable list? How will they be able to track down the feller who left them the list? What ever happened to that cow bell that used to be over the door, and why didn't it waken the drowsy Abner?

Grandpap ignores an admonishment from Abner and continues to read medical facts about the human ear. A bell, hammer, and nails are found, and Abner hangs the bell up again. Will the guys learn who their customer is now? Or will it just cause trouble with grandpap?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The influence of Diogenes Smith and his counterfeiting business lingers on in Pine Ridge. Lum has put the printing press to good use by cranking out some flyers for the store. The gents discuss the call from the government to pay up old bills, and get out of debt.

In order to write up their own bills to send to people, Lum and Abner go over their ledger books to see who owes them money. It soon becomes evident that some of the folks who owe them the most are also the most in need. Lum not only cancels their debts, but tells Abner to box up more groceries to send out to them.

Grandpap enters with news about the latest demand from government. To help the war effort, and control inflation, salaries are to be limited to making $25k per year. Grandpap is worried he may have to cut back on some of his various jobs to keep under the limit. Will he be so concerned at making too much after Lum and Abner tell him how much his grocery bill is?

PS: Wow, a bill of a whole 31 cents. Though that, and that $25k limit seem mighty low, Prices today are easily ten times that, and more. The same for most things that the dollar had the buying power to purchase. With that in mind, that ceiling on the salary would limit it to $250k today. Not a shabby income. Somehow, I don't think grandpap would have had much to worry about in going over it.</itunes:summary>

Things have run down something wonderful. Abner flubs a line as he reminds Lum that even though Diogenes is gone, his printing press is still in their feed room.

Lum gets the idea that he could add a print shop to the store. Abner gets a little confused over some of the sample material Lum claims he intends to print. Handbills, wedding invitations, and the like. He gets caught up trying to figure out who in town is getting married, and why won't Lum tell him?

Maybe Lum is just the feller to write a modern day dictionary, and put the words that he and Abner say that aren't already in Noah Webster's dictionary. Speaking of good ol' Noah, Abner thinks Lum will have trouble finding all those animals for his ark. Huh? Maybe Lum will just have a nervous breakdown instead.</itunes:summary>

What kind of questions does grandpap have in mind? For that matter, what kind of answers will Abner come up with? Assuming he isn't too confused over pretending to be a housewife named Charlie. <itunes:summary>Getting clear of the apartment building plan, Lum and Abner are once again faced with how to spend that $10K that Diogenes left for them.

The whole situation of the failed apartment idea has the town down in the dumps. Cedric has joined our heros in the Jot 'Em Down store to iron out details on the topic of car pooling. Cedric and Abner think it's some new way to wash cars, by driving them into a pond. Lum has to straighten them out on the concept, and that it's a way to conserve fuel, and tires for the war effort.
Lum does his patriotic duty and wants to hang up the poster on car pooling in the store, he reads a few testimonial facts from it, then goes to get the word out on the party line. Lum tells Abner that the carpooling idea isn't only for those in big towns, but an idea that even those in small towns ought to practice.

PS: Placed along side the scrap drives to recycle metal, paper, glass, and more, it's a good message not only for those war time years, but for modern times to help our environment. It's a message to move from being selfish, to having an attitude of community.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>After having the light bulbs go on, and the truth revealed about their plan for the apartments, Lum is worried about that check he wrote out for Squire's contractor to start work. Can he stop payment on it in time? Abner points out that it took both signatures on the check, and due to a mistake he didn't sign it.

Making a phone call to the bank, Lum gets disturbing word about Mr WW Dobbs, and all the smoke and mirrors that Squire tossed their way, and the goofy plan for the apartments has become all to clear for Lum, but it's too late. Squire enters to assure our heros that the lumber deal has gone through, but he doesn't know that Lum knows the truth. Squire has cashed the check, and put it in his own account.

Can Lum turn the tables on Squire? Holding Squire's feet to the fire, and using some of his own words against him, Lum makes him squirm a little. Convincing him that Mr Tiffin wants to buy the plans at a steep profit, they let Squire buy the plans back from them. Too bad that Lum already knows thatMr Tiffin already turned down the plans when he told Lum it was a crackpot idea.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The mysterious man in town, JW Tiffin, keeps getting Lum's name wrong as he pops in to make an inquiry. Word has gotten around about the building project, and Mr Tiffin wants to buy the idea for the Wonderful World apartments. The hope is to solve the housing shortage in other parts of the nation. Mousey is called on, since it was his idea to build the apartments.

We learn that the confused MrTiffin wants to make prefabbed apartments. Will he understand that it isn't a prefab system, but a real estate repurchasing system? He may be confused, but Mr Tiffin is about to poke an obvious hole into the apartment plan that I'm sure we all have noticed for some time now.

The stranger points out that if everybody is giving up their land to live in the apartments, then who will be living on the farms? Does this mean the end of the apartment project? Keep listening to see where this story goes next.

PS: Franklin Graham is once again the guest voice in the episode.</itunes:summary>

Lum tries to impress the venerable old friend and school chum of Squire Skimp. As the business meeting begins, certain behavior from Mr Dobbs ought to alert Lum that this deal may be a little shady.

To impress Mr Dobbs, Lum smokes cigars, and forces Abner and Mousey to do the same. How will Lum do at big time wheeling and ealing in the smoke filled room? A mistake by the queasy Abner might have saved the day for them, stay tuned to see what happens next.

PS: Mr Gregory WW Dobbs is played by the returning guest actor, Franklin Graham. The whole cigar smoking to impress others also was featured in a Vic and Sade episode. See Vic and Sade – Mr Chinbunny Wants To Smoke Cigars (Rush). 400602. An episode that took place about 2 years prior to this one. When the young school principal, Mr Chinbunny wanted to hire Vic to teach him how to smoke. It's not the only cross reference between Vic and Sade with Lum and Abner.</itunes:summary>

Inspired by Gilbert the Boy Trapper book in the library, Cedric is even planting indian corn, and bartering with the native youths to play his pinball machine. How's the plans for the Wonderful World apartments coming along?

Phone lines buzz as Lum calls on Squire, then Mousey, in anticipation of Gregory WW Dobbs coming tomorrow. Who is that stranger walking through town with the big black beard? Can it be true that Mr Dobbs will donate his time to the project? Abner is confused over Lum's saying about getting back into the harness.

Mousey enters to tell about making a few changes to the construction project, and about Cedric's latest escapades with his tent out front, Now, he has built a bonfire. This time to make smoke signals. Can Mousey reason with Cedric to take down his tent, and remove the eye sore and tripping hazzard?</itunes:summary>

Lum isn't so confused and drawn to the fortune telling mess as Abner, and has his own news to tell. Squire joins him to tell about the progress with the building contractor. As the contractor, Gregory WW Dobbs is told about, grandpap warns against doing any business dealings. Will Lum and Abner listen to him?

Can the low rates that will be charged be for real? Grandpap has been lured outside for a talk with Squire, but when grandpap enters again, he reports being paid hush money from Squire. I think our heros ought to start rethinking their decision, and fast.</itunes:summary>

In the meantime, Squire enters the store with his suggestion for a contractor to build the apartments. Especially once he is sure that the $10K check from Diogenes is ligitimate. Using the example of the poor contractor who built the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Squire convinces Lum to use the builder that was suggested. In the last episode Cedric made good on his claim to the property and pitched a tent so he could live there. Now he technically qualifies to move into the new apartment once it's built. He's a landowner, and he lives on the property. The tent is right in front of the Jot 'Em Down store, blocking people from entering, and being a general eye sore.

Moving on the the floor plan of the apartment, Lum talks with Abner about the placement of their store. As Lum continues to iron out details with the apartment, Cedric recieves visitors. Grandpap has come over since he loves to camp out, and the tent has drawn his attention. Lum reaches his last straw when Cedric has built a bonfire, and is roasting wienies.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The Wonderful World apartments, a project designed to house every family in Pine Ridge, has been going over like Gangbusters with folks in town. Lum goes over the blueprints and floor plans with Abner. He has a brilliant ideaa of putting the attic under the apartments, to make it easier for people to store their extra thhings. Huh? Then where's the basement going to be? It's the floor in the middle, of course. Just listen to see if you can figure out Lum's logic.

With all the modern conveniences, Cedric enters to explain that he wants his outfitted with a pinball machine. The trouble is, he isn't qualified to live in the apartments. The idea is for land owners to swap their property for their place in the apartment, and Cedric doesn't own any land. What can he do about that? Isn't there any loopholes for him? He owns a library card after all. Cedric leaves to study up on a solution to his problem, and Lum continues to explain his floor plan to Abner. Lower floor attics, first floor stores and businesses, a post office, a basement in the middle. It makes you wonder where the people will live at.

The crazy description is finally interupted with Cedric, and his idea to win his place in the new apartment building.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Lum tries to talk Mousey into naming the apartment building after himselfinstead of the name originally picked. Since Mousey thought up the plan, and it's just like a mother to him, he insists on naming the apartment building after himself. Will the soft spoken man hold his ground and be firm with Lum?

Mousey tries to show how firm he can be, but after a phonecall from his overbearing wife, Gussey, he ends up being henpecked instead, Mousey also reveals that his mother is a lady black smith back in Iowa. She's just like a father to him.

The guys go over how the floor plan of the apartments ought to be layed out. Ideas include a store on every floor, including a black smith shop provided by Mousey's mom. With all the conveniences, nobody will have a need to ever leave their home. Imagine that. Abner even suggests a movie theater, but the discussion gets Mousey's dander up and he phones to give Gussie an earful. Will he actually do it?</itunes:summary>

Lum is thrilled with the feedback and support that is coming in from folks. Grandpap keeps phoning in with ideas for the modern conveniences the apartments ought to offer. Will it be a benefit, or a problem when the citezens of Pine Ridge move from their roomy homes, and into apartments with neighbors separated only by the thickness of a wall? Grandpap pops in full of excitement, and ready to move into his modern apartment right now.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>As Lum and Abner ponder the big picture of solving the problem of how to spend the $10K, Elizabeth phones in to hound Abner about taking care of a few small repairs on his house. Lum's saying about not seeing the forrest for all the trees gets Abner confused.

Mousey Gray pops in with an idea that gets Lum's attention. Is it yet another wild idea, or one that is enticing enough to actually work? Mousey's detailed plan for his apartment complex sounds fine, but Lum is skeptical about it until he has heard the whole plan. Mousey figures it'll take the whole $10k to build the apartments, then take the deed to each citezen's land to let them move in. Selling each plot of land would bring in a thousand dollars apiece, which could go to building more apartments, buy more land, then build more apartments, until the whole town is living in a furnished apartment full of modern conveniences.

Lum is sold, and the new Wonderful World Apartments are set to begin construction.

PS: Can anybody see a major flaw in the plan? Don't worry, so will Lum and Abner, but not before a few episodes of dreaming about the new project.</itunes:summary>

Though a winner has been rewarded, Grandpap and Abner continue to discuss worthy projects for the money. Will they be forced to build that toll bridge that Mr Quincy insists on having built? The bridge is impractical for Pine Ridge, other than to keep Mr Quincy occupied as toll bridge keeper.

Grandpap reads more trivial tidbits from the almanac about aligator eggs, a topic that frustrates Abner. Lum enters with the news that the town is buzzing about having the contest money, and in coming up with more ideas on how to spend it. The confusing ideas about aligator farms has Lum bent out of shape, but he doesn't have room to complain much when a last minute phone call reveals his own plan to build a statue in his own honor.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>With the business of the movie premiere over with, it's time to get down to the topic of what to do with the money that was left for Lum and Abner to spend on the good of the community. The two old gents review some of the troubles they've been facing in sharing the funds in an unselfish way.

Is there a new business that could be put in town? What about a new orphanage? Coming up with an idea on their own, Lum decides to give the groceries to a needy family. The trouble is that Ulysses S Quincy thinks that because he won the groceries, that his idea of building a toll bridge in town will begin to take shape.

Meanwhile, Squire Skimp has been suspicious that the question that Lum and Abner has been posing about the contest means that the money really does exist, and he comes sniffing around to get his hand into it.</itunes:summary>

Abner arrives to tell that Don Wilson is on hand to act as announcer. At the live broadcast, Don Wilson paints the verbal picture of the gala event in Pine Ridge. He tells of telegrams from celebrities who send their well wishes, but couldn't attend in person. Squire Skimp appears on the scene to get in a word or two of self promotion his own.

Cedric walks down the red carpet with his bird whistle to share a few bird impressions. Louise Curry, the femail lead in the film appears to tell about her trip, and reunite with Abner. Gale Patrick, well known actress of the day, tells about her wonderful visit to Pine Ridge. Apparently, she has been taking lessons from Cedric on making bird calls. The two Don's conspire to cut the event short to keep Lum from giving his long winded speech. Will it work?

In the Jot 'Em Down store we find Lum putting a few touches on his speech. Abner isn't too thrilled at hearing Lum's same old warmed over speech, walking through snow to school, cutting logs for the cabin that he was born in, and more. Lum implies that he had a theatrical background in his younger days, but Abner cuts through his smoke screen to reveal the truth. An unexpected snag arises when Ezra Seastrunk refuses to let the premiere go on in the schoolhouse as planned. All he asks is the time to give a speech of his own, something that rubs Lum's ego the wrong way. If the premiere has to be changed on such short notice, where might Lum find a meeting hall big enough to handle the crowd? Will Sister Simpson be able to move all the decorations to a new location in time? Grandpap enters with news that still may shoot down Lum's new plans.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The movie premiere is the talk of the town, and we find Lum on the phone, making arrangements for it with Sister Simpson. As she makes her indecisive preparations, Lum and Abner talk about the visitors and business the premiere will bring to town. Abner is to be a ticket taker at the school house, where the movie is to be shown. Lum is holding back from being involved in any of the committees that he's appointing. He plans to be the one who rides in the parade as the guest of honor. Not to mention getting swamped by autograph seeking fans. Cedric enters, and is already ahead of the game. He already has his autographs written out, and he's paying his fans to admire him. Though Lum scoffs and shoos him away, Mousey enters with a report that Lum has been doing the same thing.

<itunes:summary>How to do the most good with $10k for Pine Ridge, is the question that Lum and Abner have been struggling with lately. Lum has decided to run his own contest, and has put up a suggestion box. The trouble is that Cedric has stuffed it with multiple requests for more pinball machines. Other suggestions border on selfish needs of civic improvement. Improvements to the school, feeding the poor and needy, but all those requests for pinball machines are enough to drive Lum stark raving crazy.

Cedric enters, but the telegram that he's delivering is thought to be just another of his pinball requests. More crazy suggestions are read, but curiosity gets the best of our heros. The telegram sets the stage for an interuption from the current problem. It's from Hollywood, and it announces the real life movie that Lum and Abner just made. It's the first time we get to see Cedric and Squire Skimp on the big screen. A premier is to be held in town. So, stay tuned to see how the movie excitement plays out in the next few episodes.

<itunes:summary>Peace and quiet has once more settled over Pine Ridge. The only problem facing Lum and Abner is how to spend the money that Diogenes left them.

Rather than keeping it for themselves, they feel it ought to be spent to make the town a better place. Abner gets confused on the topic of elevating the social life of the town. There's no buildings tall enough to need an elevator. He also gets confused at Lum's mention of the painting of Whistlers Mother.

Lum decides to leave the decision up to the citezens of Pine Ridge. Not mentioning that the money exists, a poll is put together to get ideas. To test it out, Cedric enters, and the question is posed, "If you had $10k, how would you spend it to better Pine Ridge?" Cedric concentrates on the matter, so Lum and Abner leave him to his thoughts. Lum tries his imaginary question out on grandpap. The first results don't look very promising. Will Lum get the answers he's looking for to guide him?</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>The manhunt has come to an end when Lum and Cedric came back, bringing Diogenes Smith with them. Wonderful World! Full confessions are made, and Lum is on hand in the Jot 'Em Down store to explain more details.

Abner and grandpap comment that Diogenes Honest man contest was just a fake, to cover up his counterfeit operation. Lum tells how he and Cedric tracked Diogenes down to St Louis, and discovered his real name. Diogenes enters to tell how his time in Pine Ridge has changed his life. Learning a lesson from the honest citezens of the town, he proclaims his new lease on life, despite facing time in prison.

He also tells how he didn't originally intend to give away the money in his contest, but now he will leave the $10k with Lum and Abner to decide how to spend it. The money is for real, and not counterfeit money.

PS: Roswell Graham is Diogenes real name. More than that, it's the combined real names of the script writer and the actor who played Diogenes. Roswell Rogers began writing for Chet Lauck and Tuffy Goff right after their first movie, and stuck with the show to the end. Franklin Graham was a top notch voice actor, and appeared in many cartoon shorts of the era. He came to an untimely death in 19540 when he committed suicide. Roz Rogers lived until just a few years ago, and was active in preparing the Jot 'Em Down Journal through the early years of the National Lum and Abner Society. The NLAS is the official fan club of Lum and Abner, and still has an active fan base. Do a search on Facebook for the Lum and Abner Radio Group and check it out.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>After Lum caught Abner and Cedric cranking out counterfeit ten dollar bills, he convinced them it wasn't due to any magic in the printing press.

Today Abner groans at the thought of going to jail, but it was Lum who was caught red handed with the press, while Cedric did the bulk of the printing and Lum was the delivery man to transport the packages of bills. Still, Abner worries at what Lizabeth and little Pearl will think about his fallen ways.

Public enemy, Lum, has his own troubles in convincing the government agent that it was Diogenes who was the ring leader. Too late, Lum understands why Diogenes left him in full charge when he left town, along with making connections with more of the odd happenings in Pine Ridge lately. What does the note from Mousey Gray say? Will it offer some new clue for Lum? Has all of Lum and Abner's friends turned against them? Grandpap may be able to bring some light back into their Wonderful World.</itunes:summary>
