Great Gildersleeve – Engagement Defense. ep152, 450114

Due to a recent mix up, Gildersleeve faces a breech of promise law suit. His troubles are temporarily pushed aside when Leroy enters crying, after being in a fight. Through all the happenings, Gildersleeve complicated love life needs attention. He had been engaged to Miss Goodwin, Leroy’s school principal, but hasn’t officially ended it. He goes to talk to her about it. If only Miss Goodwin will be a good sport and help Gildy out on a technicality. She’s a little too honest of a person for that, but Eve isn’t entirely without character flaws as we soon learn.

Still needing some legal help, gildy levels with Marjorie and Leroy about his troubles. He needs to prove that he was already engaged, and his breech of contract would be null and void. Can he count on his old flame, Leila? Birdie and Marjorie offer advice to grease the skids. Making a pitstop at Peavey’s, Gildersleeve gets more advice. Among other things, the two also talk about war related tensions of the day: rationing, shortages, and worries of attack on the homefront.

At Leila’s Gildy struggles to be romantic and pop the question. Leila can be fickle, will she go along for being engaged to Gildersleeve again?

Note: here’s some show history for those who may be joining the story late. To close the 1943 season, Gildy and Leila were to be married. In fact, their wedding was cut short when Leila’s husband returned on the scene. He had been presumed dead, and during the Summer break, the writers killed him off for good. All through the next season, a love story built up with Leroy’s school principal, Eve Goodwin, with Leila included to make awkward moments. That season ended with another wedding disaster, so this season began with Gildy on the outs with both his olf flames, but maybe more in tune the fickle, kindred spirit of Leila.

Enter the whole mess with the Spanish dance teacher, Miss Del Rey. It was all due to a favor for judge Hooker. In trying to be the middle man, a matchmaker, Gildy’s fickle, flirtatious ways were misunderstood.
Now, she is enjoying her hold over Gildy, and raking him over the coals.
