Dragnet – Big Grandma. ep71, 501019

Forgery detail. An accomplished check forger is back in operation. Your job, get her.

It’s Monday, April 17, and as Joe learns about the chip monks tearing up Ben’s yard, they are assigned to the case of a forger who only works during 4 months of the year. The older lady takes chances no other forger would, and doesn’t operate like any other. Her 9 years in operation without being caught is unheard of in the crime world. With the month over half done, time is running out before Joe will have to wait for her spree to pick up again after a 5 month break.

Though circulars go out everywhere, the little old lady manages to charm trust out of her victims, and her identities are abundant. With April over, Joe works other cases, until October, when the forger has traditionally began another spree. A fashion show at a clothing store may turn up the slip the forger makes to close the dragnet on her long career.

A woman who matches a general description is interviewed, but her charge plate, an early form of a credit card, has been missing. Maybe her friend Inez will help refresh her memory on a meeting they attended together? Was there someone there who might of lifted her card? Would that person be the forger? One signature on the guest list matches the handwriting of the forger. The charitable Mrs Lambert bakes in her kitchen, but has time to talk with Joe Friday about the case. As details from the kindly, unselfish old lady emerges, it’s clear that Joe’s case can be closed. What would motivate the kindly old woman to write bad checks? Where did the money go to?
