Thus far Lum hasn’t turned up. Abner grieves, and pines away in the Jot Em Down store. Grandpap tries to raise Avner’s spirits.
Maybe they haven’t got a response to the letter because the mail moves so slowly these days. Maybe if Abner thinks of some pleasant things happening in town, it’ll take his mind off of Lum.
Grandpap tells about the plight of widow Jessup. She’s losing her house due to not paying Squire Skimp. Squire wants to sell the place to expand the defense plant. In a charitable mood, and since Lum is gone and would want it this way, Abner wants to offer the widow Lum’s place to ,live in.
Abner calls the Carson place, where the widow is staying.
How will the widow pay for Lum’s place? Grandpap thinks her oldest boy is too shiftless to help with the deliveries.
Poor old Lum, Avner sure misses his old frienbd. The morbid talk creeps grandpap out. , and is sure Lumn is taking it easy , enjoying an ice cream soda in a drugstore some place.
Abner is even ready to give aeway Lum’s clothes. Grandpap doesn’t like that idea at all… unless that new blue serge suit might fit.
