Halls Of Ivy – The Scofield Prize. ep17, 500428.

A colleague of Doctor Hall’s, Mr Merryweather has great news. The covetted Scofield award is to be awarded, and Doc Hall is to be the recipient. Celebrations are in store. The good news is short lived when it is learned that the radio news story was misunderstood, and it’s not Doc Hall, but a student on campus who has won the award.

Not knowing this fact, and still in high spirits, the Halls talk with the reporter, only to experience a few comic mix ups before the crushing news that the award is going to someone else. What’s a depressed Doctor Hall to do to soothe his emotional hurt? Go into a sentimental flashback of the early days of his courtship to Vicky. He relives a disappointing moment when he thought she was leaving him to return to her career in the theater.

Back in the present, Toddy is to meet with the student who won the award. Will it go well? Will Doc Hall be able to keep his composure? He won’t say something that he’ll regret will he? Being the wise man that he is, Doc Hall listens first, then is glad over the delightful surprise that he recieves.

PS: When the news reporter from the AP arrives, a joke about the A&P Gypsies is made. The Gypsies was an early radio program from the days when almost no recordings exist today. It was a musical variety show based on the old vaudeville style, with a format something similar to that of George Burns, Bob Hope, Jack Benny and others. Sketch humor, music, and standing up and telling jokes.
