Lum and Abner – Lum Writes A Play. 430506

After mapping out a campaign for selling war bonds, we join Abner and Cedric in the feed room getting ready to put the plan to use. Lum joins them to tell how his play will raise money at a sales rally. He gives his own take on the hazards of inflation, but it serves to confuse Abner over an old Edwards saying. What goes up must come down. Parts for the play are assigned. Cedric is Mr Green, a white collar worker, and Lum is a high class grocery store owner.

Abner enters as Mrs Jones, and the play proceeds to demonstrate the issue of competition, inflated prices, and the need for people to do their patriotic duty. Don’t hoard goods, and obey ceiling prices set by the government.

In act 2, Grandpap is farmer Brown… reckon, do you think he oughtta talk with a rural dialect? By now prices are inflated, and Lum again drives home the need to watch expenses as he and Abner sing the message to the tune of, They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree.
