A story by Philip K Dick.
Planet Blue is the 4th in its solar system, and will soon be the target of a new colony. Astronauts discuss hazards of similar attempts at other colonies, and atmosphere problems that could turn the mission into disaster. Other concerns involve the presence of life forms that could be dangerous. Drones do the ground work to survey and report.
Delays in getting the expedition started begin to generate stress, but without any sign of hazardous life forms, what’s the problem in setting out? In finalizing his studies on the biology of Planet Blue, Major Hall suddenly faces a life threatening situation. Will the disturbance and instability merit further delays?
Inanimate objects around the lab, and living quarters begin becoming violent. Major Hall’s reports of such things may only get him a visit to the psycho ward, but as the incidents spread, alarms sound.
How can you battle simple, objects that are normally harmless, but seem to move around, or even multiply? Casualty reports explode. Is there any hope of extracting the colony members without also extracting some of the shape shifting life forms? With the extraction site sterilized by poison gas, and scientists stripped naked, it should be safe for the research team… right?
