A story of a busy newspaper, and a lady reporter who wants to take time to get married. Paulette Goddard is the reporter, and Fred MacMurray is her editor who couldn’t have a worse day for her to take off.
A huge news story breaks when a condemned prisoner escapes just moments before the execution. The reporter is lured away from her waiting groom, and his overbearing mom. Fred assured his star reporter that he’ll take care of the story for her, but it only comes across as being patronizing. The gracious acts only come across as reverse psychology to keep her around.
As the hectic story develops, and the reporter is torn between her story and her groom, it strains her relationship, and stands to sabotage her marriage plans. Which will she choose, career or husband? Things get as hot as they can when the escaped prisoner is found hiding in the newspaper office, and a flame of romance is kindled between Fred and Paulette.
In classic Hollywood fashion, the star reporter gets her story, loses her groom, but gains her true love.
PS: If this sounds familiar, it’s actually a remake of a film made jjust a few years earlier, but with a little role reversal. It was also made into a Lux Radio Theater production featuring Walter Wenchel. Want to check it out? I posted it a while back as a Retro Original, Lux Radio Theater 370628 The Front Page. (retro254) so you’ll get some bonus tracks and a few comments from me and the Retrobots.
