After finding no relatives in Toledo, grandpap thinks nobody cares about him any more. Lum and Abner wonder what to do for him, while Abner plays with the make shift intercom system they made for the now missing Doc Snide. Grandpap enters to tell about his disappointing trip to Ohio.

Remembering a letter from the Agricultural Bureau, Lum gives grandpap some purpose in life. How will the farm labor shortage help win the war? Lum gives a brief overview of the program of cooperation between distant states.

Grandpap isn’t convinced the job is all that important, but Lum thinks he and Abner can use the intercom system to pretend to announce the new position over the radio. Announcer Abner hides in the feed room to deliver the public service announcement to call for farm workers.
