Jack Benny – Returning To Hollywood, with George Jessel. 380403

Since Jack’s train is delayed, Don turns the show over to the substitute host, George Jessel. George is worried that Jack won’t pay him for his appearance, and Don explains how Rochester and Jack missed their connection. We then join the duo on the train, and learn about the indian vendors they encountered at the train station. Rochester also had a little trouble in a craps game that distracted him.

Tuning in the radio, Jack listens to George sharing about how cheap Jack is as Mary arrives. She doesn’t extend much hope that George will be paid. Phil plays, Swinging through the Rye.

George meets Kenny Baker. Will he be driven as nuts as Jack usually is? Jack arrives, and what about paying George? Somebody may be disappointed. George departs, Jack pokes fun at a flub from Don, then Kenny Baker sings, I Can Dream Can’t I.

Jack wants to know how his faithful cast members enjoyed his show from New York last week. Andy Devine and Schlepperman pop in. Were they any more reliable in checking the show than the rest? They tell about outfitting Schlepperman on a new ranch. Before Jack heads home, there’s time for Rochester to phone in with a report on the domestic situation.

Note: At one point Jack is upset at the gifts he picked up for his ungrateful cast. Rochester comments that if he can’t wear Mary’s Jack can still fold it over and use as a silk handkerchief. Hmmm… wonder what that could be…
