Jack Benny – Jack Goes To The Races. ep870, 540124

Note: Not sure why the title is about the race track. Jack never goes there. Sorry for the spoiler up front, but the show is still a good one. Enjoy.

Behind the scenes, we get a glimpse into Bob Crosby’s house. The jokes include a gambling habit, and hint that Bob is something of an absentee dad due to his entertainment schedule. Can Bob convince Jack to come over for dinner?

Shifting the scene to Jack’s house, we find that Dennis Day visits, and is considering getting a tattoo. Jack shows off his old Navy tattoo. Why does Jack’s American flag have only 13 stars? Dennis sings, Hey Brother Pour the Wine.

Rochester returns from doing the marketing. He tells about some discounts he got, then Jack decides to read a book. He reads the poem, The Shooting of Dan McGrue.

As Jack narrates, he also becomes the lead character. We join him in the saloon. Jokes on drinking, blizzards, and sharpshooting are featured. Braving the fierce weather, and tired of being cooped up, Jack sets out by dog sled. Will the eskimo they meet be able to help them survive? Will Jack discover gold? Will he win the affections of the dames?
