Before the story about rodeos is shared, the Sons of the Pioneers sing, Red River Valley. While at the rodeo, a cowboy dies of a heart attack. The doctor can’t find any signs of fowl play, and most people are willing to chalk it up to a unusual, but natural death. Everybody except Roy Rogers, who knows about the cowboy’s young family, and his day job as a bank teller.
Just then, word comes that the bank has been robbed. Does it tie in with the death at the rodeo, or with the other cowboy who took first prize when the expected champion died? A cryptic clue on a piece of paper sends Roy on the trail to investigate.
The cops are beginning to suspect that the death really is murder, but they need to find that other rodeo winner to question him. Did he really kill his friend just to win… or did it have to do with the bank robbery? Or is the answer something else altogether? Roy is back to clear the matter up, and explain what that coded message meant on that paper.
