Liberty ships are turned out every day for the war effort. Join the household of the Great Gildersleeves, and the excitement of having a ship named for him. The family go to the shipyard for the dedication ceremony. Dottie the talkative neighbor is excited as well.
Getting last moment train tickets, Marjorie and Leroy mingle on the train, as Gildersleeves prepares his speech. Gildy and a lady passenger get wires crossed as she tghinks the ship he’s talking about is a baby.
After a rough night with little sleep in their berth, Gildy and Leroy try to get dressed for the day. When the train stops briefly, the family stretch their legs, and manage to get on the wrong train… going back in the direction they came from. To make up for the mix up, Gildersleeves puts the family on an airplane, but needs to phone Birdie for sending extra clothes, and to get news about his car
A jive talking cabbie offers a connection to meet up with their train again. Now it’s a race to make it to the shipyards in time for the ceremony. Without a moment to lose, the ship is launched, and after the champaigne bottle shatters, it’s time for Gildersleeves to give his speech.
