You find yourself terror stricken, and in a panic when the girl you were just with vanishes.

A man narrates his unusual story, and sets the stage years ago, before the war. He sees the girl of his dreams on a street corner, and they talk about their plans for their date. Though he doesn’t want to be inconvenienced, he agrees to run an errand with her before they get started.

As she runs inside, he waits outside. Time goes by, impatience sets in, and the man decides he has waited long enough. He goes inside and there’s no sign of his girlfriend, and the apartment she was supposed to go to has been vacant for months. Nobody has seen her go in, or out, so a search is begun. The cops are called in, and the facts are drawn out and examined.

It all seems to hinge around the woman’s employer, and her job of clipping magazine articles. Suddenly there’s mor vanishing going on. Nobody has ever heard of the girl, her employer, or anything related to the business.

A gal with the right name turns up, but she is nearly opposite of the man’s missing girlfriend. Her credentials seem to check out, and the cop is beginning to think our man is a case for the looney bin. What can our man do to prove that he is telling the truth? Who would go through so much trouble to make the elaborate switches?

Is somebody setting him up to take the fall for something? He makes his break from the cops, and flees. A clue turns up to give the cops a small toe hold in believing the story. More clues emerge once the surface illusions are gotten past. The cop and our man are on to the trail, but can they reach the girl in time?

The case is bigger than first suspected, and to get the real bad guys, it gets turned over to the FBI, but the mystery unravels, and the girl is found, and that’s all our man wants out of it anyway. , as he leaves the chase to the authorities.
