Matt Dillon, US Marshal. He’s got a chancey job that makes a man watchful, and a llittle bit lonely.
Chester and Matt talk as they deal with a couple of surly prisoners that were held overnight. Once the hardcases are released, Chester continues to glance through the wanted posters, and finds a poster on one of the men that was just let go. Matt sets out to track him back down before he gets too far. It only takes a quick look around Dodge City to put the collar on the man wanted for murder, but will his partner try to break him out?
Later in the day, Chester stays at the jail since there’s a prisoner to tend, while Matt talks with Doc and Kitty about the latest developments in town. The news of some new arrivals draws Matt away to check on them. Is there going to be trouble? Might the new man have anything to do with the prisoner? So far, there’s nothing to go on, but Matt lays down the law, and his expectations.
Days pass, then one morning Matt finds the jail empty, Chester is under wraps, and the bad guy’s partner has taken charge of things in the jail. There’s a stand off when Matt refuses to tell where the key to the cell is located. The tense moments end in gunplay. The bluffing pays off as the rough justice is dished out.
