As Chester dreams of a lazy day of fishing, Matt convinces him to ride with him on the open prairie. They encounter a man on foot, Sedulie Carstairs, who has lost his horse. Pete Newton is a notorious gambler, and has claimed all the man’s possessions as they rode herd on cattle going to market. Can Matt help with the situation?

In Dodge City, Doc and Chester talk about Sedulie Carstairs, and his Brittish roots. What does it mean to be a second son? Is Carstairs being paid to stay out of England? Matt and Kitty do their own wondering about Carstairs, and his determination to win back his horse and property from Pete. Will he be able to win his horse back? Will there be trouble if he can’t?

Pete rides into town, and when he learns of Carstairs wealthy resources, he’s more than eager to renew his gambling. Is Matt going to have trouble? What’s Pete up to when he lets Carstairs win his horse back? Matt smells a rat, and with Chester by his side, they ride out fast across the plains to catch up with the cowboys.
