Rolling back the clock a little bit, we join Rochester singing in his sleep as Jack wakes him to talk about party preparations. Mary Livingston arrives and talks to Jack about his recent date with Gladys Zabisco. Dennis Day talks about his show, and its new time slot. Don arrives and complains about the gifts they exchanged with Jack. A running gag through the show is Rochester’s egg nog. Why won’t anybody drink it? Only Phil is brave enough to give it a go. Dennis sings, The Girl that I Marry, but it gets snipped. Later when the party breaks up, Dennis and Mary go on a double date with Jack and Gladys.
At the nightclub Frank Nelson is the waiter who torments Jack. Bea Benaderet is Gladys. Mel Blanc is a tipsy man who has misplaced his wife, and is having a happy new year. Sit in with Jack and the gang as they enjoy a night of dancing, romance, and wackiness. The Sportsmen make an appearance for a sponsor twist on their song.
The floor show is announced, and it’s Rodney Dangerfield. Not the comedian, but a rough and tough cowboy type who has appeared in shows from the late 1930’s in the Buck Benny shows. Jack is ready to storm out, until the master of ceremonies calls on him to take the stage. Jack waxes long in his speech, and fades into a closing commercial which is snipped. Although Jack comes back with a semi snipped closing word for the show.
Note: Dennis jokes about his name being Hassenpfeffer. He first made a joke like that in an early season before he went off to the Navy.
The Girl That I Marry. What is this about it being snipped? I’ve been looking for his rendition since I heard it in the 1950s.
Any leads to the complete recording?
Sadly, it wasn’t uncommon for people to cut out the musical numbers when radio transcriptions were made, or preserved onto other medium like tapes. I don’t have the uncut recording of the show, or of the song.
I’ll see what I can turn up, but from the attention to the music industry I see on your blog, I don’t know If I have any resources or knowledge on the matter that you don’t already have.
