Yan is a Dutch artist in the old part of Paris. His family expectations are that he should marry and live a traditional life. Although He agrees, he feels he can never find the woman of his dreams. Then out of nowhere, on a rainy night, Yan takes in a woman. The two lost souls discover secrets. Where did Marie come from, and what is the black velvet band on her neck all about?

Marie is on the run from her aristocratic family, and if she is found will be put away, never to be seen again. Yan is determined that he should marry her to save her life. Is there a place they can run to and find peace and life? After a hasty marriage, Yan races out to find a cottage for them where nobody will find them.

Before Yan can take his new bride away from her fears of death, her tormenters have already caught up to her. He finds out too late about the killing of her family on the guillotine, by the hands of the revolting throngs. Supernatural mysteries torment Yan, but the black velvet band is proof of her tragic death. The question is whether she was dead already, before she came into his life.
