Gunsmoke – Cow Doctor, Ray Kemper (Reused Script). 570728

A homesteader notorious for his hatred of doctors, sends his boy, Jerry to town to fetch Doc Adams. Has the man changed his ways? matt takes precautions on behalf of Doc, and goes to the Pitcher farm with him. The cantankerous old homesteaders get on Doc’s bad side when the sole patient turns out to be a sick cow.

Doc treats the cow, but when Jerry returns from his errand to town he reports that Miss Hill fell down from heat stroke, cut her arm, and died of her complications. Fists fly as Doc blows a fuse over the nature of his house call, and the death he might have prevented. Pitcher tries to defend his actions after knifing Doc, but Matt threatens his own revenge on the crusty homesteader. In voiceover, Matt fills in the story as he and Kitty tend to Doc’s health as he recovers. Before doc can recover, and while still weak, another urgent call beckons him out to the Pitcher homestead. Though Kitty and Matt both try to stop him, doc is devoted to his medical duties.

There’s no false alarms this time, and old man Pitcher is really hurt. old lady Pitcher is still taking offense at doc’s presence, but Matt convinces her to let the doctor do his work. Will her pride stand in the way of medical treatment? Can the Pitcher’s overcome their hatred of doctors? Will they ever get past being prejudiced at the medical title, and realize that doc is a human being with a high degree of dedication? For that matter, will doc ever get paid for his services?
