In the course of the typical rutine business of the day, Matt, chester, and Kitty meet on the street. Things are quiet in Dodge City so Matt lets Chester take some time off to visit a friend.
A young fellow, Jerry Pitcher has come to town to fetch doc. An unusual event since his ma and pa have a policy to never call on medical help. Is there something seriously wrong at the Pitcher homestead? That’s what Matt will be riding to find out.
Doc and Matt pull in at the Pitcher farm to find it deserted, other than the cantankerous Mrs Pitcher. They’re told that Mr Pitcher can be found out in the barn. What’s the big emergency? It’s doc’s turn to get cantankerous when he learns the fuss is over a sick cow. His fuse is blown when the son returns with news that a woman in town died while doc was nursing sick cows, and Matt has a fight to break up.
When doc is knifed, and near death, it’s enough to drive Matt to quitting his job just to get revenge on old man Pitcher. Matt provides voiceover to fill in the events that follow, and of doc’s recovery.
Before doc can recover, and while still weak, another urgent call beckons him out to the Pitcher homestead. Though Kitty and Matt both try to stop him, doc is devoted to his medical duties.
There’s no false alarms this time. old lady Pitcher is still taking offense at doc’s presence, but Matt convinces her to let the doctor do his work. Will her pride stand in the way of medical treatment? Can the Pitcher’s overcome their hatred of doctors? Will they ever get past being prejudiced at the medical title, and realize that doc is a human being with a high degree of dedication? For that matter, will doc ever get paid for his services?
