Jack Benny – Palm Springs Shopping. ep575, 460224

Flashback to Jack’s house where he naps, and Rochester sings. After Jack makes a quick joke at Fred Allen’s expense, Mary pops in to tell about her evening of dancing. As Jack and Mary walk through town, window shopping, she makes Jack jealous when autograph seekers ignore Jack. Mr Kitzel is selling hot dogs on the Palm Springs sidewalk. Arriving at the studio just in time, Phil does a number with the band Come to Baby.

Jack pokes fun at Phil’s band, then moves on to tease Don about his weight. Mr Streeby, the real life owner of the theater comes on stage to swap jokes with Jack. Larry Stevens sings that brand new novelty song, Pickle in the Middle. Written by Jack’s own writer, Gene Tackeberry.

Jack interviews author, Gilbert Seldie, in regards to a critical article he wrote about radio comics that appeared in Esquire magazine. To prove the critic wrong, Jack sets out to finish up by doing a nice, sweet program. No cheap shots, no insults, can it be done? Will the jokes be the same when it comes to topics like: Don’s weight, Jack’s violin, Mary’s sarcastic comebacks, Phil’s drinking, or criticicing the band?

Rochester phones in to make a quick remark on the new show format. I think that radio critic may have learned the error of his ways.
