Just going off duty, Captain Canelli stops by a barber shop for a haircut, and to get out of the snow. It had been a quiet, uneventful night for him, but now a policeman enters to report a murder, and Canelli is back on the job. On the scene we learn about the body that was found in a ditch on a construction site. Who was he? How long has he been there? Captain Canelli offers voiceover to tell how these, and other questions are being investigated.
The next of kin is discovered, but how the murder came about is still a mystery. Detail by detail is uncovered until a suspect is found. If he can be believed, a story of an accidental death, and a wierd, panicky cover up emerges.
