You Are There – The First Battle Of Bull Run, 1861AD. 481003.

The Civil war has begun, but the first land battle is looming in the air. The powerful, confident army of the North encamps to make battle on Richmond, Virginia. CBS reporters take us behind the scenes to interview the troops.

What is the climate of morale like in the Northern army? The Southern army doesn’t seem to be moved by the impending threat. As CBS reporters shift the scene to near by civilians, a festive atmosphere is in full swing as the crowds anticipate the coming event. Is everything going well with the invading Northerners? CBS reporters take us to witness a few logistic snafu’s in getting horses and wagons to the front lines. On a more somber note, we also witness some of the events at the Yankee headquarters. With the arrival of General Sherman, the signal is given, and heavy gunfire breaks out. It’s all to kick off the 100 mile march as the crowd cheers and the soldiers sing.

At the front line battle field, troops march in rank and file, directly into the Confederate stronghold and the guns that mow down the advancing troop. Things take an unexpected turn for the Yankees as the Confederates rush forth with rebel yells. Communication is cut off, and it isn’t until the troops are seen retreating back to the North that the reports come in. Retreat? Make that a total rout of the troops. Though officers try to regain control, the men have tossed aside weapons, ammunitions, and anything else that weighs down their attempt to run as far and fast as possible. Proud, marching troops have marched in, but a terrified mob races away.
