After Lum had made special plans for a quiet, romantic dinner with Miss Fredericks, his friends ruined the mood with a surprise party. He and Abner fills in a few details about the spoiled evening.
Has Lum lost out on the affections of the school teacher? Abner gets confused over the college education of Miss Fredericks, and what her degree is all about. Abner somehow thinks she’s wanting to be in the lodge, and ends up giving Lum the idea to start the library in the Jot ‘Em Down store.
The confusion isn’t quite over as Lum talks about what will be involved with rounding up books, and the service and benefit it will bring to Pine Ridge.
PS: As it turns out, the library will turn out to be more than just a passing business idea. The library will remain part of the store through the rest of the series.
